Baseball game settled by a poll?

It’s time for a ball game tomorrow evening: the Mr Paul Aints vs the Amarillo Sox, sponsored by Minnesota Atheists. A few people in the Texas media are a bit concerned about participating in a godless game, and they’ve put up a poll about whether the Amarillo team should forfeit rather than throw their ball around while atheists stand around and watch.

Do you think the Amarillo Sox should still participate in the game?

Yes 58%

No 42%

To their credit, the team is not considering abandoning their responsibilities, so they’ll be there. It’s sad that about half the Texans would boycott us.

I’ll also be there! Minnesota Atheists will be having a tailgate party beginning at 5 in the stadium parking lot. Midway Stadium is at 1771 Energy Park Drive St. Paul, MN 55108. I’ll be there in my official Mr Paul Aints jersey, stroll up and say hello.

    A night of unbelievable fun?

Man, I know we atheists can be goofy, but that is just cheesy!

(everyone note that was in good humor)

You’d think I’d have learned by now to NOT read comments on a TX newspaper site.

So…they don’t think they can beat a team of atheists? What’s the matter, Amarillo fans? Afraid of losing to a bunch of godless heathens? Don’t think your god is strong enough to help beat them? Or do you secretly doubt your god exists?

You could be writing about either team, there, but the Amarillo Sox don’t sound too enthusiastic about their responsibilities:

“I know a lot of people in Amarillo are not for it,” said Amarillo Sox Director of Publication Ben Miller. “We don’t have any say over it so it’s not something we can say we’re not going to do … We’re going to play the game regardless because it’s on the schedule.”

He had an opportunity there to make a positive point… but no. Apparently, “we’d like to refuse but we can’t” is the best he can manage. Meanwhile, over in the Olympics, sportsmen and women of all beliefs and none are competing against one another, and crowds are cheering them on.

It isn’t a team of atheists, it’s just Minnesota Atheists sponsoring the game.

I’m considering going. What section are people sitting in?

I remember this poll! As before, fake name, mailinator.com address, and I used the zip code for Salina, KS 67402. I recommend finding your own conservative Christian town to appropriate a zip code from.

As a non-USian I have to say I know sod all about baseball, but I do like what I’ve heard about the tradition of tailgate parties. It almost makes me want to go out and buy a pick-up. And beer.
