A Pharyngula podcast?

A few people expressed an interest in seeing a podcast done, featuring me (well, maybe not so much me) and a few of the regulars chatting about this and that. I was thinking that would be very easily done by recording a Google+ hangout — would that be of interest to anyone else? We’d be looking for an audience (maybe everyone would be bored with that?) and participants — I think there are a few notable names in our commentariat that people would like to attach a face and voice to.

If you’re interested, leave a comment, maybe suggest a few people you’d like to see taking part. I may pester some of you later to get a Google+ account so I can nag you to join in.

Another issue is time: I’m thinking that late evening Central time, like 9 or 10pm, would encompass reasonable hours for most of the New World, but we’d have to negotiate that with the Europeans and Australians.

Comments

  1. Mario says

Oh I’d be interested in this, I enjoy a lot Phil Plait’s Google+ hangouts. Do it please.

  2. Gen, Uppity Ingrate. says

Oh wow, yes please! The time’s not an issue for me personally if said podcast would still be available for watching and written comments, like a blogpost, later? (Don’t know how all this newfangled shiny technology thingies work).

  3. Pteryxx says

Is there any way to get a guest Google+ account that y’all could provide for anonymous or pseudonymous participants?

Also, if anyone’s willing to help provide transcripts… it’d be a huge and annoying amount of work, probably needing to be crowdsourced, but it’d really be helpful for citing and widening the discussion around the podcast topics.

  4. gragra, something clever after the comma says

Yes please. I take it it would be subscribable, via iTunes or some such?

  5. Moggie says

Podcast yes, not so sure about the Google+ angle. If you could get Sastra and David Marjanović to contribute, that’d be good.

  6. says

First attempt would be to just see if it would work; it would be on youtube and I’d post it here. Later we could talk about making it more professional.

  7. Pteryxx says

Hm, what would folks like to see as topics? Science and dissections? Stupid creationist arguments? Recipe swapping? Childbirth experiences? (…the last few TETs have been, interesting.)

Does the Google+ platform allow for links or diagrams?

  8. thomasbloom says

Yes! I live by them, 30 per week, one more like this would be just great. Interviews, arguments, your thoughts, lectures. I can’t imagine how you would have the time, but if so, please do it.

  9. andylowry says

I’d definitely be interested. Podcasts are how I get through my long commutes.

  10. sadunlap says

Sastra and David Marjanović to contribute, that’d be good.

In addition, I’d like to make a request for

    Raven
    Brownian
    Gregory Greenwood
    Josh, the Spokesgay
    Ms. Daisy Cutter
    Cuttlefish

Apologies to any regulars I have left off the with whom I have had positive interactions. My memory is not what it used to be … or at least I think so.

  11. Pteryxx says

Ooo, Cuttlefish! Ze’s determined to remain pseudonymous; but it’d be wonderful to hear someone read zir poems aloud!

  12. Patricia, OM says

I’d like to hear PZ & Matt Dillahunty swapping tales of their encounters with the gawd soaked.

  13. Moggie says

    Pteryxx:

Ooo, Cuttlefish! Ze’s determined to remain pseudonymous; but it’d be wonderful to hear someone read zir poems aloud!

I’m imagining a very distinguished voice.

  14. Emrysmyrddin says

My life is filled with podcasts. Top of that list at the moment is Cognitive Dissonance; if Pharyngula tentacl’d out into video format, well, sorry Cecil and Tom, coming second is just as good as coming first, or, er, something…

  15. mferrari says

    Oh. My. SCIENCE.

When can i start listening religiously. But seriously, I’m super excited about this I can never get enough of you PZ!

  16. says

I love the idea of a podcast. I normally lurk and the idea of having faces and voices connected to the awesome comments would rock. And, as an inhabitant of the New World, your time would work with my work schedule (I usually get off work about 10 central time)

  17. Subtract Hominem says

I would enjoy listening as well. And I’d like to add a few suggestions to the list of possible contributors besides those who have been mentioned (all of whom I agree with):

    Pteryxx
    CJO
    Owlmirror
    Jadehawk

Probably a few more I’m forgetting too.

  18. carlie says

I’d be happy to help with transcripts, but my ability to do so will probably be variable depending on the week and how much is going on at work (academic schedule, you know how it is).

  19. Brownian says

I’m excited to hear the actual voices of regulars. In my head you all have the toneless, timbreless voice that everything I read has.

I suspect that’s not the case in real life.

  20. stubby says

A Pharyngula podcast sounds great. Maybe the trophy wife could do a social skills tip of the week.

  21. tccc says

Cain de Fluer, apologies if I have that name wrong, but I hope you know who I mean.

I don’t care about faces and will never watch any of it, but download and listen to an mp3? All day long.

Please make sure it is available via an RSS feed and not exclusive to iTunes.

  22. says

I think a Podcast is a great idea. I’d certainly tune in. In addition to members of the commentariat, occasionally bringing on other FtB bloggers could be cool as well.

  23. Moggie says

    Brownian:

I’m excited to hear the actual voices of regulars. In my head you all have the toneless, timbreless voice that everything I read has.

You don’t imagine the funny accents? Not even for the Scandinavian contingent?

  24. walkingmap says

I would listen to a Pharyngula or an ftb podcast with different ftb bloggers rotating through the podcast.

  25. says

As I said before, I would listen to the fuck out of that shit.

    Brownian:

I’m excited to hear the actual voices of regulars. In my head you all have the toneless, timbreless voice that everything I read has.

Huh. I’ve “assigned” voices to all of the regulars. Nothing too special, you all just “sound” different to me. :)

  26. Sili says

You don’t imagine the funny accents? Not even for the Scandinavian contingent?

    I say “errrrr” a lot.

    And cry.

  27. Stacy says

    YES! Do it!

I’m interested in all ya’ll, but especially would like to hear from: Sastra, Brownian, Pteryxx, ‘Tis, Caine, Josh, Azkyroth. Louis!–come back, Louis! Oh, and feralboy!

  28. Patricia, OM says

Speaking of sound, I’ve always wished we could have a gong for the trolls.

  29. Sili says

Cry? Can’t say I’ve heard you do that Sili. But then, given your profession, I can see why you would. In dispair.

I try not to, but one of our secretaries broke down and cried over the exams the other day – not even exams, actually, just end of the term papers.

Since they don’t have a union rep, I had to ask my own to do something.

Anyway, I heard myself on one of the videos from Köln, and I sounded like I was breaking down towards the end.

  30. Sili says

Robert Price would be an interesting guest.

The AGW denialist who hasn’t seen a conspiracy he didn’t like?

  31. Patricia, OM says

@47 – Do you really think so? I can’t figure the guy out. Sometimes he sounds like an atheist, and sometimes I think he’s as godsoaked as Ray Comfort.

  32. Sili says

    Speaking of paying, Patricia,

Do you still want to attend Richard Carrier’s course on historicity?

I’ll be happy to sponsor your continuing education. Your attentionspan is much much better than mine. (And you know the Bible by heart.)

  33. Pteryxx says

I’d like to hear Walton or Lynna, perhaps – they have SO much knowledge, and it mostly winds up buried in TET.

  34. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

Yes, fucking please. I love my podcasts and I love Pharyngula. Match made in Valhalla. As far as regulars I would enjoy hearing from, most have been said upthread. Sastra, Brownian, Josh, Daisy, Caine, Pteryxx, Tis, Patricia, Giliell, SallyStrange, Ogvorbis, Mattir… God, there are too many intelligent voices at Pharyngula to name them all.

  35. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

Also, if it is more convenient, audio-only would be fine by me. It would be nice to have faces to match with nyms, but I really care about the discussion.

  36. flatlander100 says

Y’all run along and have fun with the microphones. I way prefer text postings to podcasts so I’ll have to pass on this one. Play nice, now.

    [Hey, you asked.]

  37. tomfrog says

    @tccc, #31

Cain de Fluer, apologies if I have that name wrong, but I hope you know who I mean.

I think it is “Caine, Fleur du Mal”. And just for you to know, it means “Flower of Evil” (or Flower of Badness, or is it of Bad-assness?)

  38. says

Have you considered doing it on Vokle? It allows you to record the session and also has a question screening option wherein you nominate others whom you trust. That way you could give admin status to your regulars from the blog and they could keep the trolls out of the discussion.

  39. amblebury says

Also, in addition to all the other people suggested here, could I add, or second if it has been suggested already, ‘Tis Himself? There’s a reason I have a file named ‘Tis Wisdom.

  40. helensotiriadis says

i’d love to join in. i’m already active with hangouts.
    +helensotiriadis

  41. daemonowner says

You know, there aren’t any podcasts that I’m aware of dedicated to smashing creationists and IDers arguments, and one with PZ Myers would just be epic.

  42. bcskeptic says

A Pharyngula podcast is a fantastic idea! Consider a call-in portion like Atheist Experience?

    Sign me up!

  43. says

If you need someone to swear constantly into a microphone in a bad Aussie accent, I’d be happy to take part.

  44. adhoc says

    I’d love a Pharyngula podcast.
I subscribe to more than a dozen podcasts, I’ve listened to every episode of the SGU (besides the newest ones) five times, I love the Pharyngula blog, and was looking for another podcast to subscribe to just last night.
I have no suggestions to make it a better podcast, but whatever it is, I’m sure I’ll love it.

  45. A. R says

Perhaps a TZT version wherein theophontes, chigau, Og, and the other TZTers talk about random stuff. OR EVEN BETTER!!!!!!! Have someone read raj’s comments like an audiobook version of the various raj experiences!

  46. says

oh, hey, I’m often awake at 9pm CST/CDT

    but

I can’t stand the way my voice sounds, i don’t know shit about podcasts, don’t remember when I last used my g+ (and thus don’t know anything about the hangouts), and I don’t have a mike of any sort on any of the computers.

plus, I’m notoriously unreliable. I can’t even update my own blog regularly.

so I guess I’m out? but I might listen to it if others do it.

  47. John Morales says

I’m a text type of person, but I suppose given sufficient incentive I might listen to podcasts (bandwith quotas permitting).

(Much rather have text, but. And, whatever happened to IRC?)

  48. A. R says

John Morales: TLC did some investigation into the IRC, and apparently, it’s inhabited by people who have never posted to, or for that matter, often read the blog. A very strange place it is.

  49. Minnie The Finn, qui devient bientôt vierge says

    Oh yes please!

Even though that would be 5 a.m. in Finland, if I counted correctly. That’s what living in obscure parts of the world does to one.

I might even stay up all night just to be able to follow the podcast live. Please let me know in advance, so I can stock up on bacon, bevvies and mosquito repellent =)

  50. says

Good to see that there is so much interest in this ! I was thinking more down the lines of a weekly session with some regulars, where a variety of topics that featured on Pharyngula (or FtB, or the world at large I guess) could be discussed and commented on, like for example the clownshoe podcast on TAM/Grothe etc. from the other day.

Now I have to go back to G+, dammit ! And I thought that if you do a G+ hangout, it’s live, you have no choice, can’t just record it for later ?

  51. Sili says

plus, I’m notoriously unreliable. I can’t even update my own blog regularly.

But this will add incentive for you. Someone to call you and tell you to get the fuck online.

And you have a nice voice.

  52. MG Myers says

Jadehawk, chef d’orchestre féministe – I agree with Sili that you have a nice voice! And I’ll add that you are mighty bright too!

  53. quoderatdemonstrandum says

    topic suggestions:

The Vatican bank woes, internecine cardinal plotting, Vatileaks, A review of Gianluigi Nuzzi’s recent book, Sua Santita, anti-gay and political lobbying, the continuing paedophile cover up.

A review of Chris Mooney’s The Republican Brain.

    Creationism in the Muslim world.

  54. 'Tis Himself says

Well er um ah I happen to be a er ah rather poor public [draw breath] speaker. I’m all right in ya know conversation but put a mic er I mean a mike in ah um and I am [pause for thought] I mean in front of me er ah and I get kinda all um er stuttery and [pause for breath] all.

  55. sc_66094e8bda5868965485ea1203e3994b says

Ahaha, terrible mental image of Dennis Markuze joining in and reading from a script before logging back out…

  56. Michael Zeora says

Google Plus does have the ability to display the Desktop of a user instead of the Camera (so anything you can pull up on you computer screen is fair game in terms of presenting – even Powerpoint if you’re good.) Compatiable with the 3 major OS systems out their (Windows XP/Vista/7, Mac OS X, and GNU/Linux)

Those without a Mic would have to use the in-Hangout Chat feature maybe with someone reading them off to make sure they pop into the audio-only variant of the podcast should it be wished.

For recording you’d just have to have someone set up a desktop video and audio capture program and go at it. It’ll be a bit of a pain to edit later. Maybe a dummy account on a second computer in the room?

Once you have it recorded (video and audio) it’s not hard to do a “day-late” transcript for those prefering text, or drop the video so it’s a pure-audio podcast.

For the perferablly anonymous users, you can always set up a new Google Account and use a “false name” off of a random name generator set to the United States Census. Nothing quite beats “John Doe” personally. Names aren’t that unique an identifer and any Online System that doesn’t require some hard proof of identifaction (like a Credit Card, etc) can be beaten to protect one’s wishes for privacy – it’s just mearly an extra painful step.

  57. w00dview says

Hells yes, I would love a Pharyngula podcast!

    ‘Tis Himself:

Well er um ah I happen to be a er ah rather poor public [draw breath] speaker.

That’s a shame. You are one of my favourite commenters on the site. I always smile when I see you appear in the libertarian threads in particular.

  58. anuran says

The AGW denialist who hasn’t seen a conspiracy he didn’t like?

Absolutely! A laugh a minute and fun to demolish.

  59. says

absolutely do a podcast. podcasts (the SGU) got me into skepticism in the first place because I love listening to intelligent talk while I’m at the gym or driving.

a pharyngucast would be most welcome

  60. jeroenversteeg says

Interesting! I’d love to hang out with you guys again after Koln.
I do live in Europe and work during the day, so 9 to 10 pm would be way past my bedtime. Nice thing about G+ hangouts of course is that they get posted on YouTube.

  61. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

absolutely do a podcast. podcasts (the SGU) got me into skepticism in the first place because I love listening to intelligent talk while I’m at the gym or driving.

Do a podcast, help make people like jesuslovesbags and me exercise more.

I, for one, will promise to only listen while jogging. Anyone else want to pledge? With enough people, we may be able to guilt PZ into it (in case his poopyheadedness doesn’t deign to do it on his own accord).
