    I sense hostility.

    Good.

Nah. I really should not have added that comment in the shape it was in. Well, except for the quoted profanity, which I’ll let stand as a perfectly appropriate reaction to someone who actually said, hurr-durr you all sound like rapists to me. But I have had it in the back of my mind throughout this thread that anyone who shows up, including the trolls, not to mention anyone in general who makes rapist-in-the-bushes stranger-danger arguments, could of course be a survivor of rape. Fuck it, those appalling commenters of Vox Day’s could be, or may be one day, and what the fuck good are all their guns and racism and pretenses that they can always control a situation going to be to them when they are date raped or abused by an authority figure, except to make their story appear unbelievable to their chosen crowd, and their pain needlessly increased by self-blame? Why the fuck that has to be so hard to get across I will never properly understand. I ought to, because it’s the same fucking thing you run into being an atheist, people’s reluctance to give up that which harms and hinders instead of helping, all the while insisting it’s the greatest, but still…Anyway, picturing someone who was a survivor making all of those jenny-points (get a big dog, don’t go down the alley, don’t be “careless,” don’t be a weak self pitier, whatever they were) suddenly got way too real for me. That would be exactly the sort of suffering I find it really hard to see. I snark in order that I may not weep, and I think jenny is just here to play debating games and be as massively insensitive as possible, but I really don’t need to play games back at her. Actually I think I need to stop before I get flat-out incoherent.

I’m impressed by the comic & length of this discussion; glancing through Jenny’s comments, it’s almost like reading defenses for the alt-med crowd or a defense of the placebo effect: “I’ll take every reasonable precaution/treatment: this can be achieved by combining both Western Medicine & Alternative Medicine!” & “if I feel better with these treatments, that’s all the proof I need that it’s effective!”

And by comparison, it would appear that the same counter-arguments also apply: some actions are simply ineffective, changing mental states doesn’t change reality, and ignoring/misunderstanding the present, dysfunctional state makes effectively remedying it nearly impossible.

Sorry you can’t understand these things Jenny–all I can hope is that you learn without having the experience & that your ignorance in the mean time doesn’t lead someone else to needless suffering.

Just a minor point concerning Vox Day: To show how much smarter he is than anyone else, he once posted a picture of his Mensa card. It was expired.

    @ Mehitabel

I meant hostility in the good way. Your decision not to use “nice” language was good.

Yes, commenters could be rape victims trying to toe the party line about being responsible, etc, but I think it unlikely. I think such a person would lurk and seeing that the party line is crap, might feel better.

When I saw the number of comments, I almost quailed from adding. I’m threadrupt, needless to say. But–if you want to see a revolting–and lengthy–mansplanation of rape in war, check out Gorbachev on Taslima’s page and her post on that subject. And if you have the time and inclination, help me take him down.

Warning for the squeamish. The photos she posts are horrific. I wish there’d been a warning at the top of her post, but she’s not like that. Those images will haunt my nightmares. But it’s all good, according to Gorbachev. Women would do that too, he says, if only they had the equipment!
