There is no requirement that Molly winner’s names must begin with “J”

It’s May, which means I have to tally up all the votes you made in April for the Molly-worthy commenters in March. We have two winners this month, the alliterative duo of Janine and Josh. Everyone say “OM!”

Now you face the onerous task of thinking back over the last month and nominating an exceptional commenter for the month of April. Leave a comment here with the name of your favorite.

Comments

  1. SC, OM says

    winners names

    (sorry)

So far, strange gods before me

(I reserve the right to add a couple more.)

    CONGRATULATIONS JANINE AND JOSH!

  2. Holbach says

Well deserved, especially Janine for her caustic and blatant reality.

  3. says

Congrats to both of them. Since there is no Josh to vote for any more, my vote this month is for Clinteas.

  4. SamB says

Personally, I nominate SamB. For truly, he is awesome in more ways than simply being a commenter.

  5. Nerd of Redhead, OM says

Congratulations to Janine and Josh. Keep those tunes coming folks.

This month I’ll nominate Kel for his philosophical insights and ‘Tis Himself for that touch of whimsy.

  6. says

Congrats Janine and Josh; well earned, both of you.

I’m cogitating on my Molly noms, but I know already that Brownian, OM, should receive Tentacle Clusters for his tenacious response to FMinusCoder, the best “mirror act” since Lucille Ball and Harpo Marx (as usual, I haven’t been able to preview that video from my work computer; hopefully it’s what I remember).

  7. Sven DiMilo says

    OM mani padme hum.

I will simply recycle my unused votes from last month, as they are still worthy:
    Bill Dauphin
    Ken Cope

(I might have voted for ‘Tis Himself, but anybody who disses the Velvet Underground in favor of John Cougar Mellencamp deserves only amused scorn.)

  8. Wowbagger, OM says

Fine, let’s move from ‘J’ to ‘K’ – my votes are for Kel and Ken Cope.

  9. Newfie says

    Congrats Janine and Josh.

Feynmaniac’s keen observation and ability to highlight the obvious that others were missing deserves a vote, IMO
    For this post.

  10. Pierce R. Butler says

I know she’s already got a shelf full, but for good reason:
Sastra‘s been making the most sense of anybody here.

  11. Naked Bunny with a Whip says

    nominating an exceptional commenter

That’s so elitist of you! How will I ever win if you put conditions on the contest like my posts being “exceptional” or “clever” or “relevant” or “interesting” or “not made of suck”? Damn!

That said, congratulations to Josh & Janine. You both deserved this! I will be rubbing against you frequently to get your awesomness on me.* Mrrr.

    * Like I need the excuse.

  12. BobbyEarle says

I will second SC’s strange gods before me nomination.

Josh and Janine are deserving, way to go!

  13. Sili says

About friggin’ time! Congrats, Janine! (And Josh too – upstart!)

    Raven:

St. Paul and John the Tripper had [the Rapture] as 2,000 years ago but they gave an Apocalypse and no one came.

    And for May: grolby

  14. Alex Deam says

Agree with SC: ‘Tis Himself is a deserving candidate this month.

And of course, congrats to Janine and Josh.

  15. Carlie says

Hooray! And the “Studmuffin/muffinettes of the OM” calendar comes out when? ;)

  16. Janine says

Thank you. I must add, I get a lot more from the people at this blog then I actually add to the blog.

It is funny to see my name connected to Josh, it is almost as if we are connected. But it is easy to tell us apart; Josh is a geologist with a great talent for explanation. I am a smart ass who connects to lots of music videos. I think the distinction becomes very clear.

An other vote and so many people whom I look forward to reading. Yet again, I feel the need to point out the a given vote does not reflect on all of the others that are not named. This is for Ken Cope.

  17. Marc Abian says

If it’s possible to have more than one award then Satra deserves a monopoly.

If not, then strange gods before me gets my vote.

  18. Desert Son says

    Congrats to Janine and Josh!

Another chime for Bill Dauphin and strange gods before me.

I’ve pretty much reached the point of just assuming Sastra wins de jure every time, whether it’s a cluster upgrade or what.

    OM mani padme hum.

Sven, not sure whether to say “Welcome back,” or “There’s still a chance to reach escape velocity and break orbit!” Ah, hell, welcome back, it is.

    No kings,

    Robert

  19. Marc Abian says

Sastra also derserves her handle spelt correctly but you can’t get everything I suppose.

  20. 386sx says

I know she’s already got a shelf full, but for good reason:
Sastra’s been making the most sense of anybody here.

I would like to second that nomination also.

  21. bastion of sass says

Big woo-hoo to Josh and Janine. The Molly was well deserved!

I agree with Wowbagger @15: my vote for this month’s Molly should go to Kel and Ken Cope.

Every month there are too many worthy nominees, but Kel and Ken are long overdue for a Molly.

  22. Alex Deam says

I’m sure there was someone else I wanted to nominate. I often read someones posts and think they deserve a Molly, but when it actually comes to nomination time, I can’t remember at all.

A month is a long time, PZ!

  23. 386sx says

I agree with Wowbagger @15: my vote for this month’s Molly should go to Kel and Ken Cope.

Kel and Ken Cope too plaease!

  24. says

    Alex (@36):

I often read someones posts and think they deserve a Molly, but when it actually comes to nomination time, I can’t remember at all.

I have exactly the same problem, which is why I’ve deferred my nominations ’til I can do some review. Every month, I promise my self that I’ll keep notes this month… but somehow, I never do. If I were that organized, I’d be able to keep my own blog going….

  25. AdamK says

You mean ‘Tis H. doesn’t sport an OM already?
    Ach, the injustice!
And there ought to be a special award for people you can’t help wanting to nominate even though they’re already ordained. Call it the Golden Sastra.

  26. James F says

Congratulations, Janine and Josh! Thanks to Janine, too, for several enjoyable exchanges of links to eclectic songs.

  27. Emmet, OM says

Congratulations to Janine and Josh — well deserved.

I support the call for Tentacles, Bar, and/or Oak Leaves and Cluster for Pharyngulord Sastra.

Once again, I haven’t been spending enough time around here lately to know who should get my vote for April. I can’t say I disagree with any of the nominations above, they all seem deserving, but Bill Dauphin is long overdue.

  28. Desert Son says

    Bill at #38:

Every month, I promise my self that I’ll keep notes this month… but somehow, I never do. If I were that organized, I’d be able to keep my own blog going….

Taking a cue, I just created an Excel document for such notes, divided by month.

As a bonus, I just completely confirmed my nerd status.

    No kings,

    Robert

  29. Sven DiMilo, still in Pharyngula orbit says

I just created an Excel document for such notes, divided by month. As a bonus, I just completely confirmed my nerd status.

I feel your…whatever. I’ve got a running spreadsheet on the current Dead tour; what songs played at which shows. Sorting is fun!

  30. Brownian, OM says

Jooray for Janine, Josh* and their JOMs!

I’m completely sure I’ve never jumped on a bandwagon before, so please forgive me this one lapse as I cast my vOMtes (like votes but can only be cast by OMs and they count for 1.471 ±2) for Kel and Ken Cope. Also, I cast provisional votes for ‘Tis Himself and Bill Dauphin, provided they can each find alliterative co-nominees.

Honourable mentions go to Strange Gods Before Me and Nothing’s Sacred (the latter whom I enjoy all the more as I think we disagree on a few key things).

    Call it the Golden Sastra.

Okay, new rule: please, for the love of the FSM, please try to avoid writing things that are going to break Brownian’s little Beavis & Butthead brain. For the next twenty minutes, the eleven distinct personalities playing knuckles and hopscotch in the playground of my head are going to wage war over whether or not I should connect the urolagnia reference or not. It is only out of my immense respect and admiration for Sastra that I likely will not.

*Note for lurking Poor White Men such as the one grolby neatly neutered in the Daughters Need Letters thread: Janine’s name precedes Josh’s due to alphabetic collation, not liberal hysteria. Okay, maybe a little liberal hysteria. Make Love Not War! Eat the Rich! Don’t Trust Whitey!

  31. Falyne says

Matt@44: your concern… *dramatic sunglasses removal* is noted.*

Congrats! Both Josh the Jeologist and Janine, the Many-Named greatly deserve their OMs. :-)

I’ll vote to keep the alphabet going with Kel and Ken Cope.

*I… may have watched too much CSI lately…

  32. SC, OM says

    So many OMs on here.

I fear the site is becoming too cliquey.

Oh, really? Well, you’ve stepped in it now, Matt.

From now on I’m gonna ignore Matt on all the recess threads. Who’s with me?

  33. Rorschach says

    Kel @ 7,

my vote this month is for Clinteas.

Im not even here anymore !!

Give it to Kel.Or Bill Dauphin.
The misogyny mob shouldnt be rewarded for their fuckedupness.

  34. says

Well, actually, Janine got slightly more votes so I put her first…but both were in a kind of landslide together for top spot.

This is of course another symptom of liberal hysteria.

  35. says

For the Molly Winners, more OMs, thanks for the noms, and here’s a nom for Carlie whom I can’t believe isn’t already beclustered with honorific tentacles (here’s hoping we both get through finals this month, too).

  36. Brownian, OM says

    Sorting is fun!

Yeah, but it’s foreplay compared to making pivot tables and cross tabs.

  37. Watchman says

The more OM’s, the larger the clique; the larger the clique, the smaller the outgroup… Eventually, everyone will have an “OM” attached to their name, and the Rapture will commence. Or something.

Business: I’m pulling the level for Strange Gods Before Me, who IMO has been exceptional this past month.

  38. Janine says

In light of PZ’s news, I claim victory over Josh!

Well, not really. But I had to say it.

I will be busy the next couple of days. Please do not abuse me too much for my claim of victory.

  39. SC, OM says

The misogyny mob shouldnt be rewarded for their fuckedupness.

If I had a killfile I would’ve added you a week or so ago. …And wouldn’t be missing anything.

  40. Rorschach says

    SC,OM,

Thanks.I guess life is still easy on the Internet.I dont have the energy to fight the stupidity here atm,so you win….Congrats.

  41. SC, OM says

    …so you win….Congrats.

Perhaps you would have more energy to make real arguments if you devoted to that purpose the time you ordinarily spend making inane comments about my interactions with other people. Perhaps that can be my “prize.”

  42. strange gods before me says

and here’s a nom for Carlie whom I can’t believe isn’t already beclustered with honorific tentacles

What what? How did I miss that? Carlie gets my vote as well, not least for her skill in close quarters combat with a cluebat: http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/05/missouri_absolves_pharmacists.php#comment-1607780

Well, actually, Janine got slightly more votes so I put her first…but both were in a kind of landslide together for top spot.

This is of course another symptom of liberal hysteria.

That’s right, Janine had an unfair advantage! Some people were voting for Gruesome Janine, others for Janine, Insulting Sinner. Josh and the several Janines are each well deserving, but then again, everyone’s using electronic voting machines.

Can we trust the count of PZmandias? Rorschach may be on to something!

  43. Sili says

Wait? Rorschach is Clinteas? Noöne ever tells me anything.

Excel may be nice (though I’m surprised there hasn’t been any shouting it down in favour of whatever Linux/Open Office uses), but it’s really much easier to just use Opera: highlight the comment in question, rightclick, save as note. That even gives you a link to the page as well.

  44. JeffreyD says

    Congrats to the “J” twins.

Voting for Bill de Dauphin for the next Molly.

Ah, back to packing, going to UK tomorrow. Walton! Up for a drink sometime?

    Ciao y’all

  45. David Marjanović, OM says

    strange gods before me
    ‘Tis Himself

Okay, maybe a little liberal hysteria. […]

And here goes Brownian reminding us why he’s already got one.

Josh, have you published in Türkiye Jeoloji Bülteni yet? (That one’s pronounced the French way, though.)

  46. Uncephalized says

Is there something weird going on with your main page, PZ? Every time I click one of the links at the top to go to the next post, it takes me to a page with messed-up formatting and I have to click a topic again to get to the actual post. It just happened in Vista and in Ubuntu so unless it’s Firefox’s fault I think it’s the site.

  47. Sven DiMilo says

it’s foreplay compared to making pivot tables and cross tabs

    I…

I don’t know how to do that. (Pivot tables and cross tabs, I mean; foreplay I can handle. As I recall.)

  48. Jadehawk says

    My votes: raven and Jadehawk.

J’s aren’t allowed this time, plus I didn’t actually do anything this month!!

congrats to Josh and Janine, I think I voted for both of you :-)

and I’m not voting this month, because I haven’t been paying enough attention.

  49. Alan B says

    Congratulations to both Js.

Especially enjoyed hearing from another geologist!

  50. Bobber says

    Congrats to Janine and Josh!

I’m going to go with Strange Gods Before Me, whose incredibly detailed and resourced writings send me off in search of references from which I might become more educated, and whose tireless efforts in defense of social justice are worthy of an award bearing the late, wonderful Ms. Ivins’ name.

  51. 'Tis Himself says

    Congratulations to Josh and Janine.*

Thanks to all those who nominated me, I’d blush but false modesty is not one of my perversions.

I cast my votes for Clinteas and strange gods before me. They’re both intelligent, articulate and passionate in their discussions and arguments.

*I put Josh first because one of the quotes in the Commenters section showing why he won his OM is mine.

  52. says

Since I’ve already nominated another poster whose name begins with the letter C, I’d be remiss in not maintaining the alliterative theme and casting my second vote for CJO, for his heddle-humbling this month.

  53. Kausik Datta says

Congratulations to Janine of many monikers and patient Josh!

    Sastra, a long deserved one.
    And…
    May I say, Holbach?

  54. Feynmaniac says

Congrats to both Janine and Josh! Well deserved.

    My vote goes to Kel.

  55. Brownian, OM says

foreplay I can handle. As I recall.

Hmm, I can’t really diagnose anything over the ‘tubes, but depending on what you’re handling and whether you’re alone or not it might not count as foreplay.

  56. Sastra says

Congrats to the March winners (who marched very well indeed.) I haven’t been reading all the threads recently, but will vote this month for

    Kel

because I noticed him being clever, wise, and informative again in April, and am afraid he’s formed a habit.

  57. CJO says

Hah, Sastra’s is well-deserved many times over, indeed.

*Bad French accent* She’s already got one. *giggling*

Ken, you are –much– too kind.

I vote Kel. and Bill Dauphin, if you’re seriously insisting he doesn’t have one. Coulda sworn…

  58. Tomecat says

Congrats Janine and Josh! Both are well-deserved.

Another vote for Sastra and strange gods before me for April.

  59. Carlie says

Thanks Ken and strange gods! I haven’t been around nearly enough lately, though. I’ll pass on voting this month because I was out a good couple of weeks in there and I know I missed some really good comments.

  60. Owlmirror says

Congrats to the ever-sassy Janine and the rock-solid Josh!

For April, I think we should kick one out for Kel.

  61. bastion of sass says

    Sili @ 61 wrote:

Wait? Rorschach is Clinteas? Noöne ever tells me anything.

I wasn’t sure, but I strongly suspected. The lack of spacing after “.” and “,” was a good clue.

Clinteas/Rorschach seems to abhor those empty spaces.

  62. Nerd of Redhead, OM says

You’re not doing so bad yourself, Bastion of Sass.

I’ve got him on a (not so) little list…

  63. SC, OM says

    bastion of sass is female.

clinteas is Rorschach. His references – like @ #49 above – to the “misogyny mob” (strange gods before me, Carlie, grolby, me,…) are ever so charming.

    /sarcasm

  64. Rorschach says

His references – like @ #49 above – to the “misogyny mob” (strange gods before me, Carlie, grolby, me,…) are ever so charming.

    Oh,I just saw this.
Bit unfair, dont you think? None of the people you name have done anything to make me suspect they would use fundie tactics to argue their point. Please dont suggest that I think they do.

  65. MadScientist says

Dang, the Rev. BigDumbChimp’s already got it; I like the way he grabs the trolls by the nuts and shakes them about; I’m not sure the trolls can figure out what to do next when confronted by someone who loves to be the focus of a troll’s hatred and enjoys insulting the trolls in the funniest ways. Can you have a collection of OMs (like Nobel medals) or is it a one-off?

  66. Emmet, OM says

    Rorschach and SC,OM:

If you two don’t stop, I’m turning this thing around and nobody is getting ice-cream!

  67. Rorschach says

    Emmet,

I keep getting in trouble when I break rule number 1,”dont post when coming home at 4am after playing blackjack for 12 hours and drinking way too much”.
Other than that,I might be a bit thin-skinned atm because of personal stuff,I almost beat up this guy in the supermarket the other day,in the express lane,on the phone, talking, talking, the check out chick was rolling her eyes, the queue was getting nervous…LOL

  68. SC, OM says

Bit unfair, dont you think? None of the people you name have done anything to make me suspect they would use fundie tactics to argue their point. Please dont suggest that I think they do.

Then to whom were you referring in #49 when you mentioned the “misogyny mob” to whom you were opposing your nominees? Who are all of the people whose comments constitute this “trend,” as you called it on another thread? If you mean me specifically (which would be strange, since I listed myself there), then have the honesty to say it (even better, try to make an actual argument on the threads in question).

    Rorschach and SC,OM:

If you two don’t stop, I’m turning this thing around and nobody is getting ice-cream!

But you promised us ice cream! OTOH, could you drive us back to the old format? This is ugly, taking forever to load, and wreaking havoc on my computer. I am not a happy monkey.

    :(

  69. says

I keep getting in trouble when I break rule number 1,”dont post when coming home at 4am after playing blackjack for 12 hours and drinking way too much”.

But, but, but… where’s the fun in that? One of my favourite moments on here was when I launched into facilis when quite drunk. He dropped (mentioning) the whole TAG argument right afterwards.

  70. Rorschach says

    Oh,
and Kel for Molly for post 371 on the “Frog vent” thread !

This is ugly, taking forever to load, and wreaking havoc on my computer. I am not a happy monkey.

Now there’s something I can wholeheartedly agree on.

  71. SC, OM says

I keep getting in trouble when I break rule number 1,”dont post when coming home at 4am after…drinking way too much”.
Other than that,I might be a bit thin-skinned atm because of personal stuff,…

    Walton? That you? ;)

  72. Rorschach says

One of my favourite moments on here was when I launched into facilis when quite drunk

Yeah, when its conversational and not too technical/philosophical its ok,posting music vids when drunk is nice lol,but I tend to get grumpy sometimes, and unfocused, and then I should not post ….

  73. Emmet, OM says

    This is ugly,

It is indeed very ugly — the way the indentation (more like outdentation!) appears on the alternate white-background posts, and the header overlapping the post number are particularly grating.

taking forever to load, and wreaking havoc on my computer.

That’s the Almighty FSM sending you a message that it’s time to get a computer that postdates the Noachian deluge ;o)

  74. says

and Kel for Molly for post 371 on the “Frog vent” thread !

All I did was quote Dan Dennett tbh

  75. says

Josh definitely deserved it for those threads that shall not be named.

Janine was long overdue, and not just for the music links.

    Cosmic congratulations to you both.

My vote this month is for Bill Dauphin just because he is long overdue.

  76. Rorschach says

    Kel,
Yeah, twas a good quote though ! And youre overdue anyway..:-)

  77. says

My vote this month is for Bill Dauphin just because he is long overdue.

I concur – as longer-term readers will have noticed, I’ve been voting for him every month for the last year.

Incidentally, special congratulations to Josh, who certainly deserved this award for his knowledgeable comments (both about geology and about the US military) and his patience with those of us who don’t share is expertise.

  78. Josh says

Huh–well what do you know about that? Wow. That’s, well…that’s very very nice of you all. Thank you. I really don’t know what to say.

In light of PZ’s news, I claim victory over Josh!

    And I happily concede*.
    ________________
*I do, however, reserve the right to tap Janine into battle when needed, thereby forming the SuperSupremeJanineJoshPowerduo.

  79. David Marjanović, OM says

Mrs. Tilton. Several people in that thread suggested a Molly on the spot for that contribution.

    Wow… wow. Wow!

That is deeply impressive. Apart from the disturbing failure to recognize LOLspeak, it is exactly how to do it. Should be printed in textbooks. Mrs. Tilton is on my short list of people who will deserve a second award once we’ve cleared the backlog of first-time worthies.

Consider “sheer howling, rock-biting stupidity” stolen. I can’t stop laughing…

    I vote for Glen Davidson.

You can, but be aware he’s already got one.

  80. says

Well, there’s precious little to argue with in the oft-repeated nominations of Kel, Ken Cope, and strange gods before me… but I thought I’d throw out a couple names of commenters with whom I’ve had stimulating and fruitful exchanges, but who seem (IIRC) to have been underrepresented in the Molly noms:

    Watchman

Desert Son (aka “No Kings” Robert)

This month? strange gods before me and/or Kel.

Oh and Sastra and Mrs. Tilton for tentacle clusters, lots of them.

  86. says

(Late to the party, as usual…)

    Congrats, Janine and Josh!

I owe my vote, yea and verily, unto the sublime Mrs. Tilton (and if she’s already got one, add the tentacle clusters).
