Any irony in the fact that the platypus’s bill looks eerily similar to the one on a certain individual in the menagerie of characters touted by Jobs’ new career steed?

Well, back when Mac was noted for its windows, and Microsoft for its DOS command line (that is, 1994), the Mac was glorified for its Catholic-like iconography while the command line with its expectations of personal responsibility was Protestant. At least that’s according to Umberto Ecco in a popular essay .

There’s a Christian version of Ubuntu Linux being worked on as well:

    http://www.whatwouldjesusdownload.com/christianubuntu/2006/07/about-ubuntu-christian-edition.html

The only difference that I can find on their page is that they include “GnomeSword, a top of the line Bible study program for Linux”

Oh no! How would people study the bible without a program to help them? They might read some of the parts that contradict church teachings! Or worse yet, they might read THE WHOLE THING and find out how ludicrous and self-contradictory the book really is.

Well, since I’m in ubuntu at the moment I figured I’d fire up synaptic and see what this GnomeSword business is all about.

As far as I can see, it’s a much slower and much less comfortable way to read an already long and rather boring book – tagged onto which there are some vaguely incomprehensible notes and a text editor so I can write myself yet more notes on the notes I’ve just read about the passage I just read.

It all seems rather hard work and I’m not sure I feel any holier for it. On the plus side, it does provide a handy interface for searching the bible for rude words…

    > Shhhh. Nobody tell them Bill Gates is an atheist.

AFAIK, so is Linus Torvalds. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Any irony in the fact that the developers intended to name Hexley after Thomas Henry Huxley, but were such ignoramuses they not only misspelled his name, but thought he was nothing more than a mere assistant to Darwin?

Ok, I love the mascot too … :-)

Also, Ubuntu comes with the Evolution mail client.

Does the moderate Christian Ubuntu come with the TheisticEvolution mail client? Does the version for fundies (wisely) not allow e-mail to be sent? :)

I think that at least some of these (xtian) loonies would be committed in this country….

I didn’t realise it had got that bad over there!

Gnomesword is the Gnome client for the open source Sword Project. It’s basically a free software for studying the bible and it includes several versions of the holy writ in different languages. I’ve been using it since my Windows days and it’s pretty good. Oh, I’m an atheist and I use it primarily as an offline copy of the Skeptics’ Annotated Bible (which I had to manually input).

I would have thought Microsoft was “Darwinist” far more than OSX. Survival through rapid reproduction, ruthlessly depriving competitors of habitat, etc. Seems like Herbert “Survival of the Fittest” Spencer at least.

Don’t forget that Ralph Reed (yes, that Ralph Reed) had a cushy $2000/month conslutant gig with Microsoft, before public outcry ruined his sinecure.

  12. Torbjörn Larsson says

Oh, I love this! Christian software! I was ROTFL!

Especially the ObjectiveMinistries page. Paley and his theories on game theory still rocks!

“Ugo, me think biomorph cave doodles made with apple stink.” (So is the same graphics made on Windows good?)

And daemons are unintentionally misspelled, and magically confined to BSD. What does he do with thermodynamics and its maxwell’s demons? Oh, I forgot, creationists perverts 2LOT.

Open source is of course socialistic, because the market of ideas isn’t a market of money. It isn’t the market mechanism, it’s the capitalism that works! Right, science must have it all wrong then, with peerreviewing and all.

    LOLOLOL!!!

  13. Torbjörn Larsson says

BTW, Windows must be the naturalist system.

Poor design by exaptation (stealing functions), duplication, reuse, and adaptation.

Virus and worm prone, but with some infection fighting capabilities.

Leaky innards (buffer overflows, lost threads, lost memory).

    Doesn’t work without the mouse.

    Dies often.

Okay, the last maybe explains why the Vatican may like it. They have to resurrect the corpse every other day…

  14. Steve LaBonne says

I doubt the story that “Hexley” was a mistake- sounds more like a bad pun.

Perhaps the scripture kiddies of the Christian Hackers Association (linked to by my name) should be consulted about what the most Christian OS is. I would have thought Jesux, but apparently it’s not real. (I can’t provide the link without triggering the spam filter, apparently because it’s at Geocities, but you can Google it.)

  16. Torbjörn Larsson says

    “What’s the FSM’s preferred OS?

Doesn’t matter which one, just as long as it’s pirated.”

Doesn’t matter which one, just as long as it’s pirated and made by spaghetti code.

Did you lot miss the following news item? Eg in:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/5244988.stm
    (also The Register and ZDNet)

I thought it was probably the best “false” positive ever. If they were real, supernatural beings would be the ultimate in spyware. Whereas, with religions being false, they qualify as meme-type viruses. Either way it’s definitely malware.
