Unlike Orac, I’m happy with the ship I’ve been assigned; I suspect Chris wouldn’t mind ending up on the good ship Serenity, either, although Chad might have some gripes (oddly, I’m less bothered by the wacky physics of the Firefly universe than I am by the abominable biology of Trek).

We science bloggers really are a bunch of geeks, aren’t we?

Moya from Farscape, with 94%. Giant space-faring passenger-carrying living ships… uhmmmm.

  2. NeutralObserver says

None of the above, the only one I’d fit into would be Red Dwarf. But then I’m a Brit.

Mine was pretty similar to PZ’s, except that I had the Bebop higher up. Which is obviously a reflection of my superiour taste in music.

Hmmm, great minds. I used the same title for my blog entry about this… and I scored Serenity as well! Though as an astronomer, the Enterprise-D would be best for me. I’m sure I’d hate the discipline on that ship though. So I guess I’ll have to settle for a ship with Inara, Zoe, and Kaylee.

  6. Nomen Nescio says

i am VERY disappointed in this quiz. i REFUSE to have anything to do with that stupid “matrix” franchise whatsoever.

For some reason I was assigned to Moya although I like Farscape the least of all.

Firefly is the only show – apart from 2001 – which had the nerve to have no sound in space which is a huge plus for me. It also has sharp scripting. But I’m sure I’ve seen the rebels-on-the-run-from-evil-empire thing somewhere before…

Star Trek was let down by really bad dialogue writing and the irritating, po-faced preachiness of the stories. And I speak as a Trekkie.

Stargate SG-1 has some inventive stories and dialogue that can be witty, ironic and gently self-mocking.

As for being a source of vaguely accurate science, you need to go back to the old BBC series Doomwatch

That said, there is a new British series called The Eleventh Hour starring Jean-Luc – sorry – Patrick Stewart which looks promising.

Doesn’t surprise me at all. I’m more bothered by the wacky physics of Firefly than the bad biology of Star Trek (though it’s such bad biology, it’s hard not to be botehred by it). We’re more likely to be annoyed by errors in fields we know well, after all…

For the record, I end up as Cowboy Bebop on the quiz. I’m cool with that.

  9. Dawn says

    I scored as Moya (Farscape)

“You are surrounded by muppets. But that is okay because they are your friends and have shown many times that they can be trusted. Now if only you could stop being bothered about wormholes.”

As a non-sci-fi person…..I have NO idea who/what this is. Now I’m going to have to do some research and find out.

  10. says

94% for Serrenity, though I think I could hang on the battlestar galactica, if I were on Baltar’s crew.

  11. Kagehi says

Well, if I place myself neutral on the concept of wormholes and hostile to even the slightest most remote possibility of psychics (not the stupid BS people call psychics), then I get Serenity at 69%, otherwise, discounting psychics and placing wormholes lower I get Farscape, otherwise if I make the “minimal” allowance for either, I get Babalon 5. All of them in the 60-70% range.

Oh, and BTW, Ian H Spedding, SG-1 style gates where one of 5 theories proposed to the government for teleportation and the “only” one they had mathimatical descriptions for, instead of just a lot of wishful thinking. It ironically seems the most “likely” of the possible systems. There is also theories on warp drive like systems, though currently the problem has more to do with the power needed to do them, than any properties of the physical world that make them impossible. The rest of the secondary tech in SG-1 is maybe less believable. I mean Naquida (or how ever you spell it) is just Dilithium crystals you can mold into different shapes basically.

  12. says

You like to live your own way and don’t enjoy when anyone but a friend tries to tell you should do different…

Totally wrong. I don’t enjoy it when it’s a friend, either.

    (94% Firefly/Serenity.)

  13. James R says

    94% serenity. Let’s go.
I saw it one time and the savant girl? She had the ministers bible tore apart and when he asked what she was doing she said “it’s broken and I’m fixing it so that it is better” or something like that. I stil don’t get the starship idea with gunslingers.
Ps it would have to be a VERY good friend.

  14. Graculus says

    91% Millenium Falcon.

On the wrong side of authority, in need of cash, and not completely reliable.

  15. says

Let me get it straight… Firefly is the only space-based science fiction show where all travel is slower than light, there is no sound in space, and an engine blowout causes the ship to continue its course rather than stop, and yet it’s the one with wacky physics? Unless, of course, you’re referring to terraforming, which can’t change the level of gravity, the angular size of the Sun, or the length of the day and year.

Anyway, I got Serenity at 100%, and am very happy I did.

  16. ChetBob says

Where’s Valley Forge? Also where’s Blakes Seven’s ship Liberator, Dark Star, Heart of Gold, Nostromo and Red Dwarf??? I am soRed Dwarf.

It’s cold outside. However, there is nothing wrong with the Universe that cannot be solved by a good, extra strong curry and travelling backwards in time. Now if you could only get the hologram to stop annoying you.

I wanted to get on Farscape’s Moya or the Serenity, but apparently I’m too averse to bureaucratic evildoers/cadaverous fiends chasing me across the universe trying to disect my crewmates’ brains. Plus, I’m scared of Aeryn. No problem, I’m almost as happy to wind up on Babylon 5 (probably due to a secret lust for bald smartasses like Mr Garibaldi).

I’m curious, though, to find out what kind of folks belong on the other crews. But despite hours of attempts (OK, in between commercials on SciFi Friday), I absolutely could not figure out how to pick a profile fit for Deep Space 9.

    Anybody have any suggestions?

Hmmm. Stuck me on Farscape. I would have preferred Babylon 5. The arc, plot (episodes could usually stand on their own, but if you were following the plot, the arc, or already knew what was coming up, you would see so much more), characterization (particularyly the character evolution — and the transformation which both Londo and G’Kar go though, both as individuals and in relation to each other), the grandeur, and last but definitely not least, the moral vision. The quiz did seem a we bit superficial, though. Puts “Matrix” in the middle, although this is definitely one of my favorite movies. (The sequels were pretty aweful, though.) But still, Bab 5 was second on their results — just should have been #1 with Matrix a close #2 — but I suppose that would have been a really weird combo.

But perhaps I am taking this too seriously. Over-analyzing.

[Picks up headphones and start listening to some Trent Reznor.]

  21. Caledonian says

and an engine blowout causes the ship to continue its course rather than stop,

Actually, the ship doesn’t continue its course, as far as we can tell.

That’s because the Firefly’s main drive relies on inertial negation to work: they couldn’t get the thing going with those little engines otherwise. Or so proclaims the roleplaying game, which goes into much more detail on Firefly physics than the show did.

but the first looks rather regimented, the second is just plain unsafe, the third wouldn’t be a place to form any lasting friendships, the fourth is rather primitive, the captain of the fifth is a headcase, the sixth is probably a bit dangerous too, the seventh is too gloomy and weird… ah well, Culture here I come!

There’s the Ark B, but I’d regard being assigned to that as a serious insult. The Captain’s been in the bath for over two years!

For all your Firefly heads who need extra DVD sets RIGHT NOW , apparently Amazon has the series for $20 (or so said dealmac.com): http://dealnews.com/deals/Fire-Fly-The-Complete-Series-for-20-updated-/111767.html

How could I forget Dirty Pair?! I actually named my first car _Lovely Angel_… Kei and Yuri-san. Yum! (Although for a ST-TNG crossover: there is an episode where Riker fights his father in a holodeck dojo. In the middle are a Japanese characters (letters), which actually were a highly stylized versions the names “Kei” and “Yuri”. Or so said Rick Sternbach at a Comi-Con.

BSG is set in a section of space where humanity has developed on a dozen colony worlds. Their technology reached a point where they began building machines, called Cylons, to act as workers, soldiers and servants. Until the Cylons became intelligent and rebelled.

The war ended 40 years ago, with a truce. Then, without warning, at the beginning of the series the Cylons launched a surprise attack and nuked all twelve colonies.

The only survivors were about 40,000 people who were in space at the time that banded together with the last, aging warship that survived the sneak attack: the Battlestar Galactica.

Anyway, the quote was referring to the fact that the ‘new’ Cylons appear to be human, meaning any of those 40k survivors could really be a Cylon plotting to wipe out the rest of humanity. The show focuses on the lives of the crew of the battleship, and how closely they work together.

Plus, the first officer drinks heavily. ;)

At that rate, just supersede physics entirely, and hijack the _Heart of Gold_.
