Hello there, everyone…

Yes, indeed… I am yet another of the large new influx of bloggers that Pharyngula has just been telling you about. And this is very exciting and quite scary for me, because, while I have been blogging for almost ten years now on one site or another, they’ve always been the kind of tuppenny-ha’penny personal blogs that people occasionally stumble across when they’re googling something. And, suddenly, here I am on a very public platform doing the metaphorical Internet equivalent of worrying about how silly my voice sounds over the microphone.

If you clicked on this blog then you probably want to know a bit about me, so here you are: My name is Sarah and I’m a 45-year-old GP living in England with one husband and two children. I’m a skeptic, a humanist, a feminist, and an atheist, and I love debunking myths when I can find the time to do so. I also love reading, and I’m a big fan of fantasy: Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series (most of his non-Discworld books actually aren’t all that), Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, Diane Duane’s Young Wizard series, Mercedes Lackey’s 500 Kingdoms and most of her Valdemar books, and probably several others.

In case you’re interested, here are some of my previous blogs:

Good Enough Mum: a general one about my life, in practice mostly about my life as a mum.

Thoughts From An Atheist: some writings of mine on religion and on the not having of it.

Parenting Myths, Parenting Facts: a few things I’ve written debunking some of the latest dogmas around parenting practice. For those who are interested in that sort of thing.

I’m also about to be late for dinner, so that should do for now. I’m thrilled to be here and look forward to posting more and getting to know people.

I need an entire revamp. Banner, blurb about me to go on the side, archives lists, the works. I do plan for it to happen, but it’s likely to take a little while for me to find time. Especially the banner, as I have absolutely no idea what to use for a picture. (Suggestions welcome…)

I had a look at your Thoughts From An Atheist blog and I liked it.
Now I look forward to reading Geeky Humanist.

    Hi, Dr Sarah.

I’m not sure, but I think you may be the first MD to blog on FtB. Are you planning to include a science-based medical perspective from time to time? I’m thinking of Orac’s contributions (often referred to by bloggers here).

That’s of particular interest to me lately. Last fall I had surgeries to replace the lenses in my eyes (which rid me of developing cataracts, but also corrected my profound myopia and gave me built-in UV protection!) And this very minute I’m recovering from today’s oral surgery (triple apicoectomy and extraction of a fractured molar).

It all has made me very aware of the amazing difference in the lives of people today compared with two or three generations ago — all thanks to science-based medicine and the broader advances in knowledge that produced and accompanied it.

I’d love to hear your perspectives.

Hiya! If I am first, it’s only by a whisker – Arun at Nastik Deliberations is a doctor, set up here three days after I did. So do check his blog out. 🙂 Still, I like the idea of having been the first to break new ground and boldly go where no doctor had gone before…

There’s one topic I definitely want to write about from time to time, and that’s vaccines; more specifically, debunking of some of the various anti-vaccine myths. I’m not in Orac’s league, but still… the more sites there are on the Internet that can be doing that, the better.

There was also an article about optimum Caesarean section rates that I wanted to comment on and point out some flaws of… except now I can’t find the darned article. Bother. Oh, well, the subject is bound to come up again at some point.

And there’s also a very problematic political situation in the UK regarding the NHS, with our current health secretary apparently on a (so far very successful) mission to anger and utterly alienate every single doctor in Britain. Things have currently reached the point where junior doctors have been mounting one-day strikes about this. Seems like something I really ought to post about at some point.

Other than that, no particular plans, but that’s a good start (and, of course, this is along with all the other stuff I want to write about at some point – and there is a LOT.) But I expect more stuff will come up as time goes on!

Oh, wait! I did think of something else – euthanasia law. But that’s a big topic, so, although it would be good to address at some point, I’m not planning on it any time soon.

Happy and healthy recovery from your surgery!
