The (New York) Times, They Are A-Changin’

The Donald had scheduled a meeting with the press
They would ask him about all his cabinet mess
There were conflicts of interest he’d need to confess
And his finances needed arranging
“Off record” he said—they said “no”, so god bless,
Cos The Times, they are a-changing.

Our paper of record is growing a spine
The ancient Gray Lady is drawing a line
There are principles they won’t let Trump undermine
It’s a battle the press should be waging
Once they sat with their coffee and said “this is fine”
But The Times, they are a-changing.

The papers and networks must all close their ranks
The Donald will test you and look to your flanks
So take him on now, or it’s pens versus tanks
And a nation itself that needs saving
As we gather together this week, we give thanks
That The Times, they are a-changing.

Actually, the original verses are probably every bit as relevant. And better written.

Anyway, I hope this is the beginning of the media refusing to play by Trump rules. Can you imagine, a press that hires and protects actual reporters, rather than relying on press releases? If we’re making America great again (*ptew*), let’s start with the press.

The NYT should have gone ahead with the interview.
    with an empty chair
    or whatever works on radio

It’s interesting reading these well after the fact. Neither the Times nor other major media have changed enough.
