It Could Be Much, Much Worse

It’s been four days, so far, without power
And our moods are still cheerful, not dour
But this powerless stint
Makes my co-workers hint
That I’m welcome to borrow their shower!

(the truth is, our wood stove heats water
To the point where it couldn’t be hotter
So despite lacking power
“Have ladle, will shower”
Say father and mother and daughter)

Two years ago, during the Great And Annoying Ice And Wind Storm of 2006, the entire east side of the greater Seattle area lost power (it’s creepy when there’s not a single light on in an entire city).Because the power grid was so damaged, they started (as would be logical) at the largest breaks (massive feeder lines) and worked a schedule down the list to the smallest outages. Our house’s break was a blown transformer that feeds 3 houses, so we were WAAAY at the bottom of the list. All told, we were without power for 9 days (which, considering my usual heavy computer use, was maddening), but it could have been worse, thanks to a gas fireplace and a gas water heater. But I feel your pain – it was about the 4 or 5 day mark which was the worst of the outage – it was when I decided to clear out the refrigerator. Ewwwwww.

And, like clockwork, as soon as I start complaining, the power is back on.No more excuses–I now have four days of grading and other work to catch up on. Rats.
