Law Suits to Silence Others

Liberty silencedAs some may be aware, if people are saying or reporting things that someone or organization does not want in the public square, they may file a law suit to essentially silence those people. Now President Trump threatened to file suit against the women who came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and abuse committed by him. Of course, now-President Trump is not the only person to do that. These types of suits are referred to as SLAPP suits. That means a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation. It ” is a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate, and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition. Such lawsuits have been made illegal in many jurisdictions on the grounds that they impede freedom of speech.” (Wikipedia)

A man by the name of Dr. Richard Carrier is filing a suit against multiple people who reported on supported allegations of inappropriate sexual advances and harassment. One of the defendants in this suit by carrier is the person who has summarized the complaints against Richard Carrier. The defendants are mostly bloggers, a student organization, and the lawsuit filed has all of the hallmarks of a SLAPP suit. They have joined together with one First Amendment lawyer (Mark Randazza), and they have set up a GoFundMe account to help cover their legal costs. Among those defendants is Free Thought Blogs – our collective site – as well as some individuals also associated with FtB.

Please chip in to help them and us defend ourselves.
