I was about to post “As an ancient history buff, that destruction pisses me off,” but no… as a HUMAN, that destruction pisses me off.
Yes. That’s what I hate most about this rage for iconoclasm – the destruction of human artworks.
Also the destruction of human artists, in the here and now. They are destroying not only the past, but the present as well.
On top of the tragic loss of history, it also gives something for those who argue for the West’s traditional theft of historical treasures something to use in favour of the practice.
“Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.”
And that future is more empty without these ancient artifacts. Salafism will not make up for that loss. After that ideology is forgotten by all but a handful of historians, our descendents will be all the poorer for its vandalism and might not even realize it.
