Equality for some

It’s one of those taunting rub-their-noses-in-it actions that Tories and Republicans love to do – Cameron appointed an anti-gay marriage MP to be minister for equalities. Hahaha get it? So funny. Hahaha those politically correct fools who think same-sex couples should be able to get married, we showed them, hahahaha.

Caroline Dinenage, the MP for Gosport, was appointed by Prime Minister David Cameron today as the Parliamentary under secretary of state at the Ministry of Justice and the minister for equalities at the Department for Education.

In 2013, she told a PinkNews reader that the “state has no right” to redefine its meaning of marriage and that “preventing same-sex couples from being allowed to marry takes nothing away from their relationship.”

Well, it takes marriage away. That’s not nothing. Not everyone wants marriage, but those who do, do. It’s not nothing.

In a letter to a PinkNews reader, Ms Dinenage wrote that the Church states that “marriage is in its nature a union of ‘one man and one woman’, and went on to say “the insitution [sic] of marriage is distinctive.”

Who cares what “the Church” says? She’s an MP, not a bishop.

At least I can say that without expecting machetes to the head.

You probably have heard this as well, but Cameron also appointed in the Justice Ministry a man who regards feminists as ‘obnoxious bigots’ (http://leftfootforward.org/2015/05/he-thinks-feminists-are-obnoxious-bigots-meet-your-new-justice-minister/).
And: http://leftfootforward.org/2015/05/meet/ (hope this link works!), a minister for the disabled who voted against benefit exceptions for cancer patients…
Cameron could not have moved more quickly to demonstrate what a complete shit he actually is.

Shitty thing to do, for sure: but lest we forget, 13 years of Labour government gave the OK only “civil partnerships”. It took a Tory/Lib Dem coalition to deliver actual same-sex marriage, as of just over a year ago.

And “those politically correct fools” include, er… David Cameron. http://www.pinknews.co.uk/2015/01/10/david-cameron-same-sex-marriage-was-one-of-my-proudest-achievements-in-2014/

I voted Labour, but actually legislating for same sex marriage and getting it past his party does stand as one of the few things Cameron can be applauded for. That his party include loons like Dineage is unfortunate, as is her appointment to this post, but I’ll eat my fez if the repeal the law.

Cameron’s main opposition is now the rabid right of his own party so he’s going to throw them a few ministerial positions.

Most ministerial positions don’t get you a seat in cabinet or any real power, its the Secretaries of State and their senior civil servants who make all the actual decisions. Department ministers get an official car and a stern warning not to touch anything that looks valuable.

Whilst it doesn’t look good, I remember at school the appointment of various posts (esp in debates) would be given to opponents of the position so as to “open their eyes” to the opposite viewpoints. But overall, I repeat, does not look good.
