Does Phyllis Schlafly use zippers?

Phyliis Schlafly says teh feminists are at war with nature.

Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly said today in her radio bulletin that the “the peculiar ideology of the feminists” is harming boys because it is encouraging “girls to enter boys’ fields” of study and employment. Apparently, some fields are reserved for boys, who Schlafly laments now “dislike school and have less interest in attending college” due to the nefarious actions of “a powerful network of feminists.”

“The feminists are at war with Mother Nature, and Mother Nature keeps winning, so the feminists are constantly angry at what they call patriarchy,” Schlafly added.

Huh. Notice where she said it. In her radio bulletin. Radio is not natural.

Does Phyllis Schlafly cook her food?

Does Phyllis Schlafly use medicines?

Does Phyllis Schlafly brush her teeth?

Does Phyllis Schlafly drive or ride in a car?

Does Phyllis Schlafly wear clothes?

Does Phyllis Schlafly live in a house?

Does Phyllis Schlafly sit on furniture?

Does Phyllis Schlafly use a computer?

Does Phyllis Schlafly use a telephone?

Does Phyllis Schlafly take airplanes?

Does Phyllis Schlafly read books?

Does Phyllis Schlafly read?

Does Phyllis Schlafly speak language?

If the answer to any of those is yes (and I would guess the answer to all of them is yes) then Phyllis Schlafly is at war with nature! Excuse me, with Mother Nature.

Phyllis Schlafly is talking bullshit. Human beings in general are at war with nature, in the sense that we don’t just take what there is and refuse to alter it to our convenience in any way. We’ve been at war with nature for thousands and thousands of years, and a good thing to. Thanks to all the humans who’ve been at war with nature all this time, I get to type on a keyboard and by doing so talk to people all over the world. I get to cook dinner, I get to wear a wool sweater, I get to be out of the rain and cold.

And I get to speak up. Even though I also get told that speaking up is more of a guy thing, I war against being told bullshit like that, and I speak up anyway. So does Phyllis Schafly. Funny thing, isn’t it.

Phyllis Shlafly is still alive?? Wow – and people say dinosaurs are extinct!

Oh, and the old “Why are you so angry?” canard, too. This one’s got it all!

Blanche, I too was surprised when her name kept popping up at Dispatches; I remember her well from the days when the ERA was being defeated, and she seemed like she was a hundred years old then. I had to go look her up to find out that she was actually barely middle-aged back then. I have always detested this woman, who has made a profitable career for herself telling other women that they should stay home and mop the floors. She used to travel all over the country, leaving her poor house-husband home to take care of the domestic duties, all the while claiming that women are inferior beings, whose only use is to make their (male) lords and masters more comfortable. She is the poster girl for Hypocrisy — even at nearly 90, she can’t seem to settle down and bake some damn cookies.

Truly, I can’t imagine how hellish it must be to be able to look back over 9 decades, realize that you’ve achieved more than most men, and know that the pigs you fronted for will never give you the credit for it because you’re just a little woman — and then to realize that you did this to yourself. How much could she have accomplished if she had admitted to herself that she is a feminist? She could have founded a successful business, or broken the glass ceiling at a large corporation, or won a national political office. Instead, she faces her waning years with a legacy as a whining harpy. Too bad.

Hmmm…I remember when the Right Wing lecture/radio host/pundit circuit was solely the domain of males. I can only assume Ms. Shlafly is going to return her generous salary/lecture fees, retire and also demand that Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, Debbie Schlussel etc. follow her lead in order to restore things to their Natural Order.

I actually had some conservative friends in college and they dragged me to see Shlafly speak. She was ranting about Bill Clinton (it was right around the time of the Lewinsky scandal) and everyone was cheering her every word and booing at every mention of the President. It was like an angry mob of seriously deluded people. The one upside was that it was probably the first moment when I realized the nonsense (and evil) of Conservatism and put me on a steady path to becoming an unapologetic liberal.

Isn’t going to university just as “against nature” for boys/men as for girls/women? What Natural fields of work are naturally for men anyway? It’s not like wild apes have bankers, construction workers, and race car drivers.

  6. Shatterface says

Radio is entirely natural. It’s hearing voices when there’s no one there. Happened to everyone in Biblical times.

  7. Shatterface says

Reminds me of the story about a passenger on a plane who complained about two men snogging because ‘It’s not natural’ and someone replied ‘You’re flying!

This has inspired me to invent a game: take an anti-feminist quote and try to guess if it’s from a deluded religious fundamentalist or a super-rational atheist with a YouTube account. It’s surprisingly challenging when the quote makes no reference to God. It’s not a very fun game, mind you. Actually, it’s a little depressing.

    Does Phyllis Schlafly speak language?

That’s a subject of considerable debate, with most of “yes” arguments incoherent or downright offensive.

  10. Gordon Willis says

It seems to be natural for us to oppress one another. It’s certainly very natural for oppressed people to complain about it. Which bit of nature are we to encourage?

If you have a dysfunctional system of education, wouldn’t it be more sensible to correct it than try to maintain it by continuing the same age-old custom of depriving girls of their rights? But I suppose that it’s natural to stay stuck in the same age-old patch of mud rather than go to all the trouble of moving somewhere better.

I so totally see what she’s saying. I’m a female biologist, and my husband is a male librarian. We’re so not natural. We also both have two heads and 12 toes (one each foot!). We’re clearly mutants and should be despised.

No, wait. We are perfectly normal happy human beings doing things we enjoy and finding fulfillment. Like Schlafly, who clearly enjoys spewing bile on the radio, and doesn’t seem to realize that radio is a man’s job. Oratory is a man’s job. Why isn’t she home baking cookies for the grandkids and knitting shawls?

There are three species of chimpanzee. Humans are the one that acts least naturally. So, does Schlafly think her lifestyle best matches that of a bonobo, or of the more common chimpanzee? Either way, as we have heard no reports of her ever wanting to mate in public with multiple partners, it appears she has been choosing a lifestyle that is very unnatural for either of the two natural forms of chimpanzee.
When one reads books such as “Sex at Dawn”, it is clear there were no so-called traditional housewives before there were houses, which only started about 15,000 years ago. The gender roles she praises (but does not emulate) are recent inventions. That is, unless one believes that the natural and traditional role of women is to believe an honest talking snake instead of a lying god.

Ms Schlafly knows she’s talking guff and has made a poopload of money off the flock she’s built.

She has three degrees, went to premier universities when women students were rare and has been flogging this shit since the forties – as a career. She’s one of the prime movers and shakers in forming the modern reactionaries crowding the airwaves now. She popped out a genetic copy that became the founder of Conservepedia.

She’s fluffing her tribute ticket as one of the Matriarchs of the Royal houses that will never suffer the consequences of what she says. That’s for poor people, who deserve what happens to them in God’s ordained world.
