300 out of 26,000

Uh oh, Jimmy Carter is going to be in big trouble with the MRAs.

Sexual assaults, honour killings, prostitution, physical abuse – No matter where you look in our world, you will find women and girls being abused. It’s why the 39th President of the United States calls it THE biggest challenge of our times. Today, we hear from Jimmy Carter with his Call to Action and his new book in his only Canadian interview.

In the US military alone 26,000 sexual assaults took place and only about 300 actually resulted in anybody being punished. There’s an aversion to admit what goes on even in our most cherished institutions.

Well that’s because there were 25,700 false accusations of men by lying bitchez. Actually the 300 that resulted in conviction and sentence were probably mostly lies too. Right?

It’s a volatile east, west, north and south for many of the world’s women. Special crimes, special punishments and special hatreds are directed at so many women and girls.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter despairs of the mistreatment and abuse. He believes religion is often an excuse for discrimination against women.

Indeed it is; we see it every day. And the best part is, it’s such a powerful excuse – because few people like to piss off the believers, especially few people who depend on votes to keep their jobs.

I may be only a Canadian, but what I’ve read of carter, he doesn’t just pay lip service to the teaching of his religion, he actually lives them. For that, I admire the man.

Yeah? I admire him more for not living the teaching of his religion. Wikipedia quotes him as saying:

The truth is that male religious leaders have had – and still have – an option to interpret holy teachings either to exalt or subjugate women. They have, for their own selfish ends, overwhelmingly chosen the latter. Their continuing choice provides the foundation or justification for much of the pervasive persecution and abuse of women throughout the world. This is in clear violation not just of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but also the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Apostle Paul, Moses and the prophets, Muhammad, and founders of other great religions – all of whom have called for proper and equitable treatment of all the children of God.

    Wait, what?

The Apostle Paul? Mr “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection”?

Moses?! The guy who supposedly wrote the first five books of the bible which contain all the horrible commandments about stoning women who are not virgins on their wedding night; stoning rape victims if the don’t cry out, or marrying them off to their rapist if they do; and generally treating women like chattel?

    Mohammed?!!

I say props to him for speaking up about gender equality despite his religion.

Alas, I also learn from Wikipedia he’s “pro-life”.

I never have believed that Jesus Christ would approve of abortions [… ] except for the times when a mother’s life is in danger or when a pregnancy is caused by rape or incest I would certainly not or never have approved of any abortions. I’ve signed a public letter calling for the Democratic Party at the next convention to espouse my position on abortion which is to minimize the need, requirement for abortion and limit it only to women whose life [sic?] are in danger or who are pregnant as a result of rape or incest. I think if the Democratic Party would adopt that policy that would be acceptable to a lot of people who are now estranged from our party because of the abortion issue.

    *sigh*

Religion is used as an excuse, but don’t forget the “it’s science!” or “it’s nature!” crowd. I think they are equally destructive beliefs.

As is noted on the Wikipedia page, Carter left the Southern Baptists years ago, due to them being far more a political group hiding in religious trappings than anything else. (At the time, a lot of people said ‘What took you so long to notice?’) Of course, treatment of women is hardly the only reason the modern fundamentalist movement hates Carter: his stance regarding Israel really annoys those who work with the Israeli lobby and who believe that Jerusalem must be protected to be the site of the Second Coming. Of course, the modern fundamentalist types conveniently forget that Carter WAS actually an evangelical when they insist that they need a President who is ‘one of them’.

Carter has his flaws, certainly, but he at least lives in reality for the most part, and seems to believe in doing the right thing.
