The guy in the boat

CNN keeps telling us it feels like a decisive moment, it feels like the end of the story. We don’t care what CNN thinks it feels like. Just tell us what you know.

I want him not to be killed. I want to know why.

I once lived in Boston, for a short time.

“We are getting the feeling that this is it.” Oh shut up.

I also once lived in a house with an old boat of the landlord’s in the yard.

They don’t want him to deploy the suicide vest. Well clearly he doesn’t want to deploy it either.

Me too. I want him taken alive. I want him to stand trial. I want to know if, why, and with whom.

CNN is a fucking joke. Except less funny and somehow less informative than the actual joke news sites.

I’m not in Watertown but I am in the Boston area; I couldn’t go to work today and spent all day watching the news. It has not been fun.

I saw reports that the older boy spent six months out of the country last year. If true, that strongly suggests that he was being indoctrinated somewhere. Someone may well have been exerting a great deal of effort to attempt to get at young American muslims. And if they don’t find out who it is, he’s going to keep on doing it.

I’ve been hearing that the two brothers are from Chechnya. Most ethnic Chechnyans are Muslim. Prepare for another wave of xenophobic hatred and bigotry in the US.

First thought: congratulations, Boston, on finally breaking the pattern of solving problems by killing with maximum force all the people who might have been able to tell you why they were doing it – or torturing them, or shutting them away for decades, or spreading so much mis-information that even if the authorities do work out why something happened it’s by then become impossible to convince the public.

(NB: Those remarks contain both genuine praise of recent actions and sincere criticism of institutional mindsets rather than individual humans. If you disagree, fine. If you don’t make the distinction, the over-reaction will be all yours.)

Second thought: BBC has it that the family is of Chechen descent BUT was moved somewhere else by Stalin (died 1953, remember) and has lived in various places since. There is also, it seems, some family split lurking in the background. On what we know already, we’ve more than one explanation for either brother or both going off the rails. It may turn out to be Islamist fervour but we’re not there yet!

I think they were using “feels” precisely because they don’t know.

They also felt compelled not to reveal that they didn’t know and to keep talking so what’s left but saying it feels like something?

I watched an hour of speculation going on and then heard someone say “of course we can’t speculate…” and then proceed to spend the rest of the sentence and the next entire hour speculating.

Well the whole of yesterday (thursday) was devoted by NPR to breaking news from Boston – except there wasn’t any breaking news. I have never heard so much aimless, pointless, totally inane and content-free chit-chat in my life! What is even more discouraging aboutr modern media is that the BBC was doing the same thing. And always, at the end of a segment of this egregious bullshit, the disclaimer from one or the other of these pundits “well I must emphasise that we don’t actually know anything yet”……….

    I mean WTF?

Incidentally according to an article on ninemsn here :

    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/04/19/22/21/boston-suspects-chechen-brothers

.. [ Dzhokhar Tsarnaev – ed.] describes himself as speaking Chechen as well as English and Russian. His world view is described as “Islam” and he says his personal goal is “career and money.” .. [Snip] .. According to the website spotcrime.com, Tamerlan was arrested for domestic violence in July 2009, after assaulting his girlfriend.

New details of possible interest there.

CNN was by far the worst when it came to rampant, unrepentant, baseless speculation. The local news here was remarkably not terrible, and mostly reported police movements in vague, nonspecific terms, before finally returning to just doing regular news around 4PM.
