Another brain exploding quote from a Republican candidate

This time from Mr. Frothy Mixture himself, Rick Santorum:

Discussing controversial classroom subjects such as evolution and global warming, Santorum said he has suggested that “science should get out of politics” and he is opposed to teaching that provides a “politically correct perspective.”

We don’t want facts and data informing our political decisions! Only baby Jesus.

What a fucking moron.

That’s actually hilarious. Not even “this particular bit of science is wrong” at this point, just “science in general is wrong”. Utterly amazing.

  2. rbray18 says

eh.this is yet another grasp for attention by the mentally 2 year old.”quick i’m loosing to every one i need to get back in the limelight,i know!i’ll say something so stupid they’ll have no choice but to talk about me!brilliant.”

  3. says

“Science should get out of politics”?

REALLY, Mr. Frothy-Mix? You can say that with a straight face? Really?!

It would be nice if politics could take its filthy hands off science for a change.

  4. spdoyle17 says

Santorum = clown. He was my senator for twelve years, and honestly, I got to the point of liking having him around. I don’t agree with the vast majority of what he says, but he fits the “designated nutjob” role so well, he’s a natural. Now if someone like Romney said that, I’d be concerned. Have I just been stuck with him so long that what he says just doesn’t register the way it does for everyone else?

  5. sithrazer says

Frothy the snowman has that backwards, politics should get out of science (although, I’m sure some would object based on government funded grants for science stuff. That’s not what I’m talking about).

  6. eigenperson says

I’m pretty sure he made an error in his statement. He isn’t against teaching that provides a “politically correct” perspective; he’s against teaching that provides a “correct” perspective.

  7. Alt+3 says

You know, I think it’s about time we followed up on Dan Savages threat to redefine “Rick” as well as Santorum. Any suggestions?

  8. jakc says

Oh it’s worse than you imagine. Rick is opposed to sending too many kids to college because 62% of the kids who come from a faith tradition lose it when they go off to college due to the liberal atheist professors and associated conspiracy. (That’s a rough quote but accurate as to his meaning). He wants more kids to to community college so they can learn to work with hands and minds (by which I assume he means “hands”).

  9. says

Well, I suppose we could make “Rick” yet another slang term for “penis,” but it doesn’t seem like it would have much staying power.
Maybe a portmanteau of “ripped-dick” (as in, belonging to a man who has spent so much time furiously maturbating that he has broken the skin on his genitals).

  10. SallyStrange, Spawn of Cthulhu says

That was my thought exactly. “Politically” don’t enter into it. He’s opposed to correctness in general.

  11. Greg Smith says

Wow. I saw Bachmann on a morning show Tuesday. She was saying that she was clearly the best Republican candidate, because she disagreed with more of Obama’s policies than any of the others.

For some of these yahoos, it seems, it’s just become a ‘stupid’ contest. Maybe for all of them.

  12. N. Nescio says

I think it’d make a better verb. ‘to Rick’ meaning…well, I don’t have anything thought up, yet.

  13. Randomfactor says

“Rick” has to be an adjective, denoting a particular quality of the frothy mixture. So that Googling “Rick Santorum” brings up a particularly disturbing aspect of the naturally-occuring phenemenon.

“Does anyone know if bleach will get this Rick Santorum out of these boxers, or should I just throw them away?”

  14. spdoyle17 says

The longer Bachmann & Santorum are in the race, the better it is for everyone, though. Considering their outlandish positions, and the mobilization of their part of the GOP base, they’ll push everyone else to the right. Since PA has closed primaries, & since I’m from a conservative district, I switched my registration so I can vote for one of those loonies in the primary. Could you imagine those two pulling 10%+ going into the spring? It’d make them overshoot at & after the convention, and would burn them come November. One can only hope! :)

  15. sumdum says

Oh if only science was part and parcel of politics. Have politicians decide what to do based on solid science.. that’d be something.

  16. Danial says

I know this wasn’t what he was referring to, but I’m a political scientist. Does that mean I can’t do my job?

  17. Will says

There are plenty of reasons to attack Rick Santorum. Making fun of his name, which he has no control over, is immature and at the same intellectual level as attacking someone because of the way they look.

  18. ohioobserver says

It is, however, legitimate to make fun of what that name is attached to, and stands for, and it is fair to highlight the blatant hypocrisy and bigotry of almost everything the man says. The name (and its satirical meaning) becomes shorthand for a vast load of shit.

  19. Dan McPeek says

“Frothy the Snowman.” LOL? That’s LOL squared, brilliant!
You should write for the Daily Show. Can they say “frothy?”

  20. says

I’m a bit annoyed that Politically Correct doesn’t mean what it seems to, but rather “something the Left Wing wants to force down your throats”. If those words meant what they seemed, ie any decision made with regard solely to political considerations, then they could be used to describe the refusal to teach evolution and global warming, or calls to “teach the controversy”. That is, while it’s factually correct that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming, it’s politically correct to claim it’s inconclusive so the creationists don’t get upset at you.

  21. Sili says

So when will Bachmann come out in favour of gay marriage and abortion? Obama’s not keen on either of those.

  22. Sili says

Well, his parents or other forefather really shoulda changed the family name by deed poll as a soon as they discovered what it meant.

  23. says

NO, RICK MEANT science fiction should get out of politics. We can’t continue to pretend there aren’t significant problems with Darwin’s theory of evolution. Everyone knows (or should know) by now, that man and apes never shared a common ancestor.

I mean if you can’t discover God, you aren’t likely to discover anything significant about the origin of man. Other than trivia fodder.

I don’t know a lot about fellow Catholic Rick Santorum but what I have discovered is interesting. Here is a man that has tried to package and present the very outlook of God to the American people—from a nominally Christian (Republican) platform. He wasn’t thrown to the lions—he threw himself to the lions!

The American people are not ready for the will of God.

These are a people that drops nuclear bombs on innocent civilians. Civilians, they foreknew would never respond to the leaflets of warning dropped to them.

A country that attacks other countries on a whim. Ruins their infrastructure and economy (but care packages were handed out for a while, right Alyson?), introduces a failed system of democracy and goes back home—all the while leaving each affected country’s political system wide open to terrorists and/or criminal political elements.

A country that introduced, and champions, wide-scale infanticidal murder to the rest of the world—under the guise that someone ever had the right, over and above another, to extinguish that innocent person’s life.

Good luck Rick, you’re dealing with people like Alyson here, who gleefully joined the notoriously unstable Dan Savage in his well-known internet hate crime to smear your good name with imagery associated from his chosen lifestyle.

Dan Savage—the one who bemoans bullying—yet is the biggest bully out there, complete with a proven and current record of abuse of others.

  24. says

While I don’t mind Santorum being turned into a pejorative, thought I’m betting his kids do, I would certainly hope that Dan doesn’t follow through on the whole “Rick” thing, there are a *LOT* more people out there with the name Rick than there are Santorum.

I don’t think its all that nice to the millions of people who are *NOT* Rick Santorum to have an eager Sex Advice Columnist decide to suddenly turn their first names into a pejorative for some perverse sex act just because a douche-bag senator can’t keep himself from spouting off some homophobic nonsense.

I think that, like Randomfactor has suggested, we should totally work to make “RickSantorum” (all one word, say it fast) something even more disgusting and vile than Santorum. Sorta like:

“Aw hell, not only is there Santorum everywhere there’s bits of RickSantorum too! It’ll take a while to clean up this disgusting mess!”

Just need to figure out what “RickSantorum” is. :-)

  25. Rumtopf says

Hey, maybe you should go gargle some cholera, or any pathogen of your choice. Germ Theory suggests that you would be likely to get sick, but dont you worry, you should be just fine – science is fictional!

And everyone knows(or should know!) that the earth is flat.

  26. ckitching says

That’s just it. Most aren’t opposed to political correctness, but just political correctness that doesn’t favour them. They’re perfectly willing to demand the resignation of people who express social political opinions counter to theirs when they deem that that person should not be allowed to express them (teachers and professors are favourite targets). They’re also fond of suppressing criticism of military and paramilitary initiatives, and are shockingly successful at it.

  27. hoverfrog says

Does the White House have a science advisor these days? If Santorum does get in then it sounds like a pretty cushy job. Just stay out of the way.

  28. says

The NYT had a video about the Muslim Brotherhood (Nicholas Kristoff narrated) and there was a reference of them providing free science training to the poor.

  29. progjohn says

As an European I’ve just realised “Tea Party” doesn’t mean what I thought it meant. I assumed it referred to the Boston Tea Party, but it clearly derives from the Mad Hatters Tea Party instead.

  30. scorpy1 says

“Good luck Rick, you’re dealing with people like Alyson here”

So, on top of all that delusionality, you’re also addressing this post to the Santa Orum of your mind?

  31. says

I had the same thought exactly. For the Evangelical Christian Dominionist Right Wingers, ‘politically correct’ is a disparaging term that describes something the “collectivist, communist-socialist liberals” want, so it must be evil and offends the holy sensitivities of the Deity.

“That is, while it’s factually correct that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming, it’s politically correct to claim it’s inconclusive so the creationists don’t get upset at you.”

Yup, that’s it exactly. Rick Santorum is a frothy mess.

  32. says

Santorum had a good showing in Iowa, but I just do not see any evidence that he can continue that momentum. Regardless, this year has given us one of the worst fields of Presidential hopefuls out of the Republican Party that I can remember.
