A CRISIS!

This is serious guys. I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m so torn!

The release date for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is July 15… RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF TAM9!!!

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Friend: Oh boo hoo, you’ll have to wait a couple days to see Harry Potter because you’ll be in Vegas hobnobbing with famous skeptics. #firstworldproblems

I must gather some fellow skeptics to go to a midnight showing with me! Harry Potter in Vegas! Who’s with me?!

I am one of those snobs who doesn’t like to see films of her favorite books. Also I hate the theater. And you’ll probably see it in 3D anyway. Stupid strabismus. Also I can’t afford to go to Vegas. But mostly the first three. I’m totally not just making up excuses to make myself feel better about not going to TAM.

I’ll go, and if you get me into the hobnobbing parties with the famous skeptics, I’ll even include some gratuitous complimentification to boost your ego and counter-act your friend’s boohooing of your crisis. :-)

Picking up on the first point for the sake of conversation…If I’m going to see adaptations, I find I enjoy them far more if I see the movie, then read the book. That prevents enjoyment of the film on its own terms being marred by indignation :)That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the LoTR or HP films, but I have spent a fair bit of time in them going “but… but… what? If you miss that out, then the other won’t make sense!” I so think the scouring of the Shire should have been in the films… and Saruman falling out of Orthanc… and the Weasley’s house getting blown up… (note: I’ve only seen up to Half-Blood Prince of the HP movies)

Make it a side event! You’re in like Flynn. Bonus points for being located in Vegas, which means you can get drinks whilst watching the film. ^_^

Have you read HARRY POTTER AND THE METHODS OF RATIONALITY?http://www.fanfiction.net/s/57…As much as I love the novels this story of a young science and rationality prodigy version of Harry is actually far better than the original in my opinion.

TAM or Harry??NO CONTEST….TAM!!!!!I hate seeing movies on the 1st week much less the 1st night.I like the smaller crowds of the 2nd week.

  7. says

erm, why would you wanna see the Harry Potter movies in the first place. IMO they are horrible. If you have read the books there is no point in watching the movies, unless you wanna see how bad the movie sucked

  8. Rollingforest says

Best to get tickets ahead of time though. I’m sure that seeing Harry Potter in Vegas has crossed the mind of more than a few people if they are going to be in town at the time. Especially other people at the convention.

  9. Rollingforest says

That’s the one good thing for me about living in a semi-rural area: No movie ever completely sells all of the tickets, not even on the first night, so I can always be assured of a seat if I want it.

  10. Grendel says

In your subjective view they sucked. That’s ok, but given that this is a skeptical blog you need to provide evidence that they did indeed suck. I think box office takings are indicative that the gravitational impact of the movies on physical and electronic forms of financial exchange could indeed be loosely defined as ‘sucking’ but I think the producers would see that as a positive rather than negative form of suckage. In other news, a lot of people enjoy the entertainment they receive from the movies, but we don’t all share the same tastes in entertainment so it is fine for you not to go. I however will be!

  11. Charon says

On the other hand, there are occasionally movies that are better than the original books. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and The Jane Austen Book Club are two that come to mind, in my opinion.

This is gawds way to tell you, you sould not dabble in scepticism and witchcraft. If you were a good christian girl, you would only be concerned with going to church, you see? So you should avoid such schisms of the mind by simply accepting Jebus as you personal sailor. As for me, I am currently overrun by acute envitis, since I probably wont be able to see the movie until August and ever going to TAM is 101% impossible for me.

  13. A.K. says

Oh! I’ll be watching that movie on worlds largest IMAX when it comes out. I’m very excited for it.

  14. Greta Christina says

Ingrid and I are in, unless my talk is first thing in the morning the next day.Skeptigeek Potter posse! Awright!

  15. Smoking Glacier says

In matters of taste there can be no argument. I would be interested to see a chart showing various movies plotted box office takings against number of people who think it sucks.I suspect the more popular the movie, the more vociferous the suck-screamers. I hate Harry Potter and everything he stands for. The more you love him, the more my hate grows.

  16. UbiDubium says

I’m hoping to scrape up the money to be there. If I can do it, I’ll expect to be in!

  17. Quatguy says

I will never understand the desire to see new movies on opening day, or along a similar vein, line up to be one of the first to hand over cash for the latest techo gadget or video game. Instant gratification in this way is highly overrated and I guarantee you that you will not include missing the premier (of what is likely to be a very mediocre movie) on your life-list of great dissapointments and regrets. Wait a week or two and see it when the theatre is not so crowded if you must, or better yet, wait for the reviews and maybe skip it once it is panned. Gees, I sound like a grumpy old bastard, but never were truer words spoken.

  18. J. Mark says

Let’s see…Harry Potter is the Devils work according to the religious community…and an Atheists convention…..seems like a perfect fit to me….

Jen. We all care about your health. If you are going to be a party to this madness, you must be HEALTHY. My suggestion is juicing for two days before. Use beets, carrots, parsley and kale. Never tomatoes! We all know where that leads. No alcohol the day before and the day of the event. And forget wearing the pyramid hats. They don’t help and the police won’t take you seriously when you are arrested trying to grok a fire hydrant.

  20. Steve In Satx says

Personally, I’m waiting for both part 1 and part 2 to come out on BR before I watch either. That way I can watch both parts for the first time together (the way it should have been).
