Porn is evil! God is good! Rarrrr!

Man, you know what’s one awesome thing about school starting again? Endless blog material! Thank you, conservative uber-Christian Midwest!

My friend directed me to this lovely event on facebook – Porn & Popcorn – that will be at Purdue on Friday the 11th. I thought, porn and popcorn? At Purdue?! Awesome! Then I took the time to read the event description, and I wanted to cry. Actually, it’s so bad, I’m going to have to continuously interrupt it; sorry folks:

Porn has now become an accepted mainstream topic.

Good. We need to stop having such Puritan views of sex.

Porn is glamorized in almost every hit TV show today, magazine (teen or adult); it is piped into your cell phones, children’s cell phones,

Okay, fear tactics much? Porn isn’t randomly being sent to the phones of 12 year olds. Actually, your 12 year old shouldn’t even have a cell phone, but that’s a different pet peeve of mine altogether. If there’s porn on your 16 year old’s phone, it’s because he or she wants it there. And if they can’t get it on their phone, they’re going to find other ways to find it because they’re naturally horny and sexually repressed by your domineering religion.

book stores and even public libraries. Porn is regular conversation at jobs, in classrooms, and on most radio programs. Yes, it can even be found on the shelves of the libraries at the conservative midwestern campus of Purdue University.

Uh, no, I’m pretty sure it can’t…but if it can, where can I find it?

The statistics associated with pornography and pornography addiction are truly staggering. What began as seemingly harmless “pictures of pretty girls and some good articles” has spawned a generation of pornography that is more explicit, more violent, and more deviant than ever before. We need to start talking about it.

The statistics associated with pornography and porn addiction are pretty much worthless, but spread by extreme right religious groups in order to scare their followers into not being sexual beings. You know, human beings. Yes, some studies have shown that watching violent porn increased thoughts about violent sex – but some studies show the opposite effect, that porn decreases rape. You know why? Correlation doesn’t imply causation. People could be watching violent porn because they’re already predisposed to violent sexual thoughts! If you were looking for porn and accidentally found something violent and you weren’t into that kind of stuff, would you just sit and keep watching it?

And violent sexual thoughts don’t necessarily mean rape. A large amount of people are into BDSM, which some people may view as “violent,” but it is completely consensual. Of course, we know how much fundamentalists respect consenting sex between two adults… And just because someone has a rape fantasy doesn’t mean they actually are going to – or even want to do it. Rape fantasy is one of the most common fantasies in females, but that doesn’t mean those women actually want to be raped. That’s why it’s called a fantasy.

And on a final note, I don’t deny that there are people with porn addiction, or that this isn’t a problem. But you know what, you can get addicted to nearly anything. Do we ban alcohol because some people have problems with it? How about the internet? Hell, some people get addicted to working out – does that make it evil? No. Some people are just predisposed to engage in addictive behaviors. If porn starts to interfere with your normal life, then yes, you should probably lay off. But for the rest of us, it’s not dangerous.

Join us for a FREE event at Slayter Hill on the campus of Purdue University!

The band will start rockin’ at 9:00 pm
XXXChurch (leading expert on pornography) will present from 9:30-11:30
Then, choose to stay for a midnight showing of the movie, Fireproof.

…Lies about pornography and Kirk Cameron’s shitacular movie Fireproof?!?! Nooooooo! I feel dirty knowing this will even be occurring anywhere near me! It’s bad enough they’re spreading lies, why spread bad movies too?

Stuff like this really bugs me. The same people who think porn is evil think all sex is evil. They’re the ones who cause more problems. If we we more accepting of sex and had more comprehensive sex education, we’d have less teen pregnancy and less spread of STDs. And you know what, people may even rely on porn less because they wouldn’t feel so bad about actually having sex! It just drives me mad that people can be against something so natural and human that they need to go around fear mongering.

I was waiting for this post after you linked it on Twitter.

Just knowing such a thing exists bothers the hell out of me, though it says the same things about porn that my fundie roommate does. It makes me feel about as creeped out as knowing there are three "Glenn Beck 912" organizations within 30 miles of me that I know of. *shudder*

That dude from the XXXChurch is such a fucktard, if you haven't check out the episode of Bullshit! on porn, he is in it. You should go just to see him talk. Like Erp said, under their definition of porn (notice they didn't define it) the Song of Solomon and many other passages in the Bible would be banned (Ezekiel 23:20 – There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.).

Pornography has been a part of human civilization from the beginning. One of the first things we did with our ability to draw stick people on the walls of caves was draw stick men fucking stick women. Honestly, we're sexual creatures. It happens.

When used incorrectly, porn can really screw someone up. That's why it's often used by sexual predators on children during the grooming process – to determine how much the child trusts the adult and to sexualize the child before assaulting them physically. In this case, porn is bad.

When it's used by adults, porn can be healthy, and is, in most situations – an enhancement to the normal sexual pleasure people seek on a daily basis. Nothing wrong with that. Some use it to fulfill fantasies they don't dare to search out in real life – which is healthy when those fantasies are legal.

The problem with porn is that is always invariably linked to the various sexual predator classes – rapists, molester, pedophiles, and other. This is because porn is used as a substitute; most people in this class don't particularly want to engage in the activities that make them infamous. So they try to substitute with pornography – in the end, that fails, and they get busted with the porn too.

But most adults use porn responsibly. And if parents were responsible, their kids wouldn't have to worry about it, either. But today's parents don't care enough to secure their children from things they don't want the kids to see. That's the rub, not porn itself.

I asked a speaker at a Christian Union event why watching porn was adultery in God's eyes when I couldn't care less if my boyfriend masturbates to it. In the end, after a bit of back and forth, his response was 'because God says so'. It did get a laugh out of the crowd though.

If anyone else would like to apply for the position of "leading expert in pornography" please raise a hairy-palmed hand now.

    Congratulations!

    No, I won't shake if that's okay.

Jen – you have to attend this thing and blog about it! Ask tough question and take notes.

I really hope you do this… but don't worry – nobody expects you to endure 90 minutes of Kirk Cameron at the end… that's much too cruel!

Yeah – it sounds like a really tough assignment! ;)

Seriously – even if you make it part-way through I would be interested to read what the porn-a-thon was like, what was discussed, etc.

I know it's a lot to ask – but I don't think teh crazy is contageous! (plus think of the porn awaiting your return to civilization!)

This is my favorite review of the spectacular $100,000 budget, all-volunteer cast (and yes, that means you, Kirk) "Fireproof" (which, by the way, I HAVE seen…and is the greatest. movie. ever.):

"Switching it up from the football field (Facing The Giants) to the firehouse with their latest movie, Fireproof, the evangelical filmmaker siblings Alex and Stephen Kendrick now join spiritually minded colleagues like Mel Gibson and Tyler Perry in transforming Satan's headquarters – the multiplexes – into ministries of religious healing between handfuls of popcorn. And though their church (Albany, Georgia's Sherwood Baptist Congregation), which serves as the movie production company (utilizing the flock as its nonactors), claims as inspiration the needs of a neglected niche audience of Christian faithfuls ignored by Hollywood, ironically Fireproof's actual target demographic is the very sinners more likely to frequent blockbusters."

Number 1: I know Tyler Perry, and he ain't no saint. Number 2: Multiplexes are "Satan's headquarters"? Awesome! Now I know where to find him! Thank you, Kendrick brothers!

The worst part about this is that the porn they hate so much–the violent, punishing kind–is a result of a misogyny perpetuated by mainstream Christianity. Porn like that tends to depict the women who are in it as deserving because they are slutty. When Christians judge women based on their sexual activity (slutty if they have it, pure and wonderful if they don't), they participate in the same discourse, which, of course, is terrible for both women and men. This isn't just about hating sex, but about punishing women for having it.

Two options for protest come to mind. One, a sing in. Get the local Rocky Horror crew to show up, with outfits under normal clothes. In the middle of the Q&A, do the time warp en masse. You need a big group for this. Two, get a laptop, a projector and a copy of Orgasmo. Show it on the side of the building being used for the anti porn party.

People cannot be addicted to porn any more than they can become addicted to the internet. And that's considered a joke in academic circles. Addiction to things like alcohol are classified under the DSM III, and I can assure you that there's never been a proper classification of someone addicted to porn. It's a corruption of the word.

My biblical study (Leviticus 1:14-17)suggests that everytime you kill a pigeon in a ritualistic manner, God masturbates.

Seriously, I don't like the emergence of extreme violence in pop culture. Even if our appetite for violence is as healthy as our appetite for sex, hardcore splatter should be regarded in the same way as hardcore porn. Do you see public advertisement of HC porn movies? Please think about the adults…

Do I sound like a whiner? Not being a native English speaker, it's difficult to express thoughts accurately. Also, I write from Europe and don't know exactly the situation in America. Except that most of our movies come from Hollywood:)

A great antidote to Fireproof is Audience of One where a fundie church minister receives word from God he should set up a film studio and make Star Wars but with God all over it. Its a beautiful car-crash in minute detail and shows just how much these people believe in their little head voices (read: get off on having a flock do whatever they say).

I remember a similar program coming to my campus, and they asked the student body to take a survey that they would use in the program. I did it, for shits and giggles, and it basically said that if you were into BDSM, you were sexually abused and were also into bestiality. I was fairly shocked and confused by that "fact."
