Giliell proudly presents: The Art of Shivia

My older kid got a graphic design tablet for Christmas and has been trying it out ever since*. And of course she’s mightily drawn between being very proud and very embarrassed, but I got her permission to post some of her artwork under the name “Shivia”. So welcome to the Sinnoh region in Pokémon.

*Setting the thing up was not user friendly, but once I got it running I told her “look, there are some tutorials, maybe you should watch those”, and she replied “oh mum, I already know that stuff!”. I left her in the living room and went to the kitchen, but before I could sit down she called: “Muuuuuum, what am I supposed to do now???”. Digital natives my ass…

    That is impressive for a newbie. I have no idea what the Sinnoh region is and only very superficial knowledge about what Pokémon is, but the drawing is nicely done.

    Hm. That drawing style really isn’t my cup of tea… The artist does know what she’s doing, and if she keeps at it, she could very well become very good indeed.

    That is god work, especially so quickly after getting the tablet -- learning a new system and all that involves.

    @cubist
    She’s been drawing ever since she could hold a crayon. She skipped all the typical stages that toddlers usually go through and drew recognisable animals at age three, a feat I still haven’t mastered…
    I don’t think she’ll stop any time soon.

    This artwork is lovely and it looks like the young artist has talent.

    That being said, a certain detail catches my attention. In Pokemon games protagonists are supposed to be about 11 or 12 years old (in Black/White their age was elevated to 14). Yet in this artwork Dawn has larger breasts than the average adult woman. I get the reasons why media portrays adult female characters is ways that are as sexy as possible. But when cartoon children characters who are meant to be in their early teens are given body shapes that are more curvy than those of real life adult women, it bugs me. (I know that young girls are drawn with very curvy body shapes by people who own the Pokemon franchise, I am criticizing their aesthetic choices rather than your kid’s drawing.)

    Oh, for one thing, she loves to imagine the characters as young adults. I’m not sure if she intended this with this drawing, but in general, yeah, you’re absolutely right, they’re meant to be very young (hell, after 23 years Ash is still 10 years old…), but definitely look older. Though the franchise generally doesn’t portray Dawn that curvy.
    Let me put it like this: at 13 she’s trying to fit into a body that is suddenly very strange. Kids grow at extremely different rates.
