Grey may not be the most exciting of colours, but the stories in this week’s Andrew Lang fairy book are full of adventure and most of the tales are new to me. The illustrations are the work of H.J. Ford again, and it was difficult to pull a few favourites because all the drawings are beautiful. Beginning next week, the remaining Andrew Lang coloured fairy books have actual coloured illustrations, so you won’t want to miss those. For today, let’s have a look at the lovely black and white drawings that accompany these stories.

This is gorgeous.
Now i want to read the whole thing! I somehow missed the earlier FairyBook entries, so I’ll have to go back and look at them.
When I was a kid I erotically fixated on the princess in the picture of Bensurdatu (p111) and -- as I see it now -- I still do. Also Falabala in Astérix, but that’s a different book.
I love the illustrations. Although I only know (possibly) the last fairy tale, which has a Slavic version with a literally identical title.
Sometimes the captions are hilarious if you think about them alone “The white wolf asks the princess a question in the wood”.
Also, I hate the guy kicking the bear. Fuck the fucker, there’s no excuse
