A Day at the Zoo 8: All in White

One of the sensations of our little Zoo is Flöckchen (little Flake), the albino roo.

It’s damn hard to take a picture because the camera has a hard time focusing on white (or black)

Most cameras have a focus and exposure lock if you depress the trigger halfway. Point at a neutral color/lit part of the scene in the same focal plane as the target, autofocus/let the computer figure out exposure, keep your finger down on the button to lock it, swing onto the target and push the rest of the way.

For fashiony stuff that trick works especially well -- keep a gray card on a stand just out of the scene and work off that.

Looks like Flöckchen is squinting because the light is bright. I guess that for a true albino, life is constantly just like coming from ophthalmologist’s appointment (I dislike mydriatic eye drops very much).

They might disapprove of that at the zoo.

Flöckchen is adorable. I love the 4rd shot, it brought a much needed smile to my face today :)
