Jack’s Walk

Even my favorite resting spot seems uninviting today. ©voyager, all rights reserved

The warm, welcome sunshine of yesterday has given way to dark and gloomy skies today. It’s hard to tell what time it is outside because it always looks the same. There isn’t even any grainy  mist or fog to enhance the mood. It didn’t seem worth going back to the river because the ground is still muddy so Jack and I went exploring around the neighbourhood instead. I hope it gets colder soon (wow, I can’t believe I just said that!) because I think I know which direction the beaver den is, but I need firmer ground to get there. It’s winter. In Canada. It’s supposed to be cold.

When is “the dead of winter”? We haven’t really had a snow day yet, and that’s crazy for North Central Pennsylvania.
I moved up here in 2002 and we used to have 2-3 feet of snow some winters. The last few years it’s been hardly anything. It’s as if the global is warming.

My dogs used to love hiking in the snow, so long as they could occasionally shake a paw at me and have me crush the ice out of it with my clever ape fingers.

I wouldn’t sit on wet snow either. Wet seat of pants is no fun.

We’re having proper snowfall here now. Gulf of Finland is still mostly free of ice, so the snow can be partly lake effect snow.

We got our snow and current temperatures guarantee that it will stick around for some time. If the meteorologists are correct, of course. Who knows with that mysterious breed of forecasters, though.
Hope you get your winter soon! But I also hope it doesn’t overstay its welcome and manages to leave at a decent time this year. ;)

I like the pattern on the ground and the wood textures on the side of the table and seat.

We’re having frosty mornings every day since the the beginning of the month, which is what January is supposed to be like. A lot of people have been complaining that it is “too cold”, but today I heard an old lady say something along the lines of “frosty January, handsome year” (in Portuguese, it rhymes). Which is a saying I had never heard before but makes sense. A proper winter is necessary for nature to reset its cycles, and I’m afraid proper winters are becoming rarer and rarer.

    Marcus,
I think “the dead of winter” has been replaced by “winter is dead.”
Our temps climbed all the way to 4 degrees by afternoon and then it started to rain.
