Gingerbread Season – Part 2

Happy Solstice everyone. As far as I am concerned, Christmas can get stuffed, but I like the fact that from now on days will again be slowly getting longer. It will still take a month or so before it is really noticeable, but it is going there!

Anyroad, here are another two gingerbread houses my mom made this year. She made a lot.

She even puts texture in the green icing on the trees! Or is that a mold… but wow, I just love these. Do people eat them? I would have a hard time doing that even though I am sure they are delicious.

    My favourite are the trees.
I think to eat them it is important to have someone take the first piece… but it would be so difficult to be the guilty one.

    These are fabulous, as always.
I’d love to see a series of photos of the construction.

@kestrel, that is not mold, she carves that texture by hand.

Some people whom she gave them do not eat them, ever. I do, after one year, because that is about the maximum they remain edible. And if one does not eat them, after a few years they crumble anyway, even when packed in foil. It is transient art. That is why I make pictures each year.

I did not think of making picures of the process, sorry. Maybe next time. If there is going to be next time that is. Apart from being old, my mom has got cataracts so her vision, which is not great as it is, will worsen over time.

The details on the roofs are amazing. I also love the horse and the pig.

I don’t know how I would feel about eating them, but… uh… that’s what cameras are for, right? So you can have the pictures of the gingerbread and eat the gingerbread too?

I just came back from the kitchen, where my mom was still making the last one for this year. This alowed me to make a few pictures of the process. I will post it with a little “how to” description later. Not too soon though, it is a lot of pictures and a lot of writing even for a very brief article.

@Charly, #6: Wonderful! I shall look forward to it. I appreciate that it’s a transient art but I think I would still feel guilty to eat such a beautiful creation! :-D I have no such thing anywhere near me so I am safe from those guilty feelings.

I love all the little details like the tiny flowers on the hearts and the tiny hearts on the bells.Your mom is very talented.

Wow -- I’ve never seen gingerbread houses with so much fine detail on them. I especially like the trees and the frosting “icicles”.

@springa73, feel free to search this blog for more and diverse creations from both my mom and me. She makes them each year, and each year they look a bit different.

My kids are insisting that, once I get home, we will be making a gingerbread tower with the leftover cookie dough (home-made). I don’t know yet whether I will give in, or disappoint them just in time for the holiday season…
