Monday Mercurial

Hello and welcome to Monday Mercurial, a regular feature for all the critters out there. Sadly we won’t be able to keep up the Daily Bird, but we will replace it with three regular features throughout the week for the winged and furred inhabitants of planet Earth.

This is a young magpie that kept begging for food, even though it was already old enough to get over to the bowl of dogfood some campers had forgotten outside.

We fairly regularly get a riotous cacophany when a similar aged magpie has been seen in a vulnerable situation by one of the local cats, and all of it’s adult relatives gang up on the cat while the youngster gets itself somewhere safe. Then inevitably tells the adults that the whole palaver has left it starving and they should bring it food NOW. They make so much noise that it is not at all unusual for some human to go out to see what’s going on, then do them the favour of seeing off the cat. Canny birds :-)

I love the wing feathers. The picture show the character of the young magpie very well.

It takes a village to raise a magpie, it seems.

Aah, young birds. They will pester their parents for food literally until they can get away with it, and well past the point of really needing it.

Very cute captures. Are the yellow things on the ground flowers of that yellow flamboyant tree you posted earlier?
