Does anyone know what kind of tree this is? I’m having difficulty figuring it out from my plant guide. It looks and smells a bit like hydrangea, but I’ve never seen a hydrangea tree. Whatever it is, I think it’s beautiful. It’s been in bloom for several weeks and the flowers move from a deep rose colour to the palest of pinks. It has a small, sweet scent and it attracts butterflies. I waited around for a bit hoping one would turn up to add to the photo, but Jack was restless and no doubt keeping them away.
Please let me know in the comments if you can give me any information about this tree. I think I might like one for my own garden. In the meantime, happy Saturday. I hope everyone has a good weekend.
It’s a hydrangea alright, and given its treelike habit could be Hyrangea arborescens.
I can’t really say, because I have zero experience with, and zero knowledge about, hydrangea. I cannot remember ever seeing it around here.
But dr. Google says that growing hydrangeas into a tree-like form is possible, similarly like with Fuchsias and some other decorative shrubs.
…or even Hydrangea arborescens…
I never realized hydrangeas would be able to grow as proper trees. The Finnish name of hydrangea is for some reason hortensia (probably from French via Swedish and/or German). It’s a pretty tree.

Thanks. Hydrangeas grow really well in this area and they put on quite a show so we see them in lots of gardens.
Hydrangeas can be climbers too, not very good ones, but still climbers. There is one in our garden, I don’t know which one, it was there when we moved here.
Having that tree hydrangea in a group of bushes would be rather fun.
It’s the kind of tree that needs to be peed on. Humans over-complicate things.
