The Daily Bird #741.

I do not feed in the summer, but there is a bowl of water among the bonsai trees so the birds have a place to drink. Goldfinches are a rare sight and were gone before I could get a better picture.

I so love these birds… this is a really good picture because it shows the field marks so well. I hope they come back so you can get more photos, I can’t get enough of looking at them.

My best viewing of goldfinches has been when I have large thistles, like teasle or cardoon, that have seed heads sturdy enough for the goldfinches to perch on while they eat. When I grew them in Sheffield I found that even if I didn’t see goldfinches at any other time they would turn up for the autumn thistle seed feast. I think thisles are beautiful, but whether you want to devote space to large thistles just to get good pictures of goldfinches is another matter!
