I am not entirely sure I would be able to bash my head with a rolling-pin, even whilst wearing a steel helmet. That ringing must be unbelievable and deafening.

I thought they wore padded caps under the helmet (various layers depending on how likely it was that there was head-bashing in the near future)
The big jousting helms were worn over a padded cap, a chainmail coif, then a straw-ticked mattress..
