When I got your email, I saw ‘faces of the vatican’ and I’m not sure what I expected to see, but when I saw the first image, I burst out laughing. :D
They are fabulous sculptures. Are they inside or outside? I like the second one best, that’s all over ferocious, and all the little details!

Sculpture is the art that most often amazes me. The attention to detail in show is indeed astounding. But I’m still making fun of them, because that’s how I roll! COMIC COMIC COMIC

They’re inside. The first is one of a pair of lions holding St Helen’s coffin on their backs, the second… lion? dog? is one of two holding Constantine’s daughter’s coffin. The third was part of a wall decoration, and the last was the corner of something or other… To be honest I’ve forgotten. :D But they seemed like trustworthy and characterful faces, all of them.

It was very nearly overwhelming, not least because the group I was with had special permission to be there after hours -- so we didn’t have to deal with the people and the crowds. And we didn’t have time for the whole museum. But… impressive doesn’t quite cut it, and not only because of the gilt and obvious opulence -- the art in that place is of a magnitude defined best by “really something else”. Mostly the sheer amount of art (and you realize the effort and people-power and planning that goes into it).

rq, I had the same feeling when we were at the Hermitage. Everywhere I looked there was something amazing. I had to focus myself again and again because my eye was drawn all over the place. Also, I don’t know what that second beast is, but I think I’m in love. Look at that face.
