    Raucous Indignation, not everyone can afford a crooked tip. This is one nice way to cheer a server’s day, especially when you can’t afford more.

    Yeah, it’s funny (to me) but most people are extravagantly grateful for one of these… and I’m thinking, You know, it’s a DOLLAR… and I feel bad, but they are so happy!

    I generally leave only one bill folded along with the rest of the tip. I’ve had some restaurants, where I go frequently enough that they know who I am, start a great big shadow box thing or something like that and start displaying them. Some wait staff have seen these before and they collect them; one lady told me her son collects them, so she always saves them for him. So that’s kind of cool.

    A couple of these folds take a really long time to do. The koi, for example. That sucker takes me hours to fold, so I don’t often give those away. I would have to really like you… :-)

    That is wonderfully cool! This is such a creative and imaginative way of dealing with tips. I know back in my serving wench days, I would have been delighted, and I would have saved them, rather than bank them. I just boggled over the koi. I can’t imagine being able to do that.

    That koi is amazing! I always try and do the origami pieces that Siggi over at A trivial knot posts and I would love to fry this one.
    @ kestrel: I just searched for koi origami folding but somehow wound up emptyhanded, do you have folding-instructions for this little critter or could me point in the right direction?

    (also on a side note: I never looked at a dollar in close detail, but in pic nr. 2 it somewhat looks like that eagle just flew butt-first in a window. Also²: Why is it holding arrows?)

    It is a dollar + THOUGHT+TIME+ATTENTION.

    Avalus, pure speculation on my part, but the eagle appears to be holding an olive branch in it’s other claw, so I’d guess something along the lines of ‘we like to live in peace, but can go to war to protect our freedom if we need to’.

    Anyone who is interested in this really fun hobby, you will do best with brand new dollar bills. Everybody hates them because they stick together and are hard to count, so you probably won’t run into any at the local store or restaurant; instead go to the bank. That’s usually where I go to buy them. They hate them too and will probably be thrilled to get rid of them. Also, yeah… some country’s currency does not fold quite as well as dollar bills, which are a very nice perfect and strong paper. However, I’ve hear from reports that pound notes fold well. I have never tried that, as I have no pound notes, but it’s worth trying your currency and see how it works. The proportions do matter, especially in intricate folds like the dollar ball (that’s what I call it) and the koi.
