    These birds are silver gulls (Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae), native to Australia. Although they seem to be in plague proportions at times, especially when sun, sea and fish and chips are involved, they are listed as a protected species in Victoria.

    They are extremely hardy and can live up to 30 years, quite a ripe old age for a small bird species.
