Today is a day to celebrate Indigenous People, all over the world, not a day to wallow in memories of genocide and Christendom deciding they had a right to everything. So today, take the time to learn a little about indigenous people, their history, their ideas, their cultures, their arts, the current fights they might be engaged in to protect the earth. If you live near Indigenous people, think about taking time to reach out.

And there’s all day today to write a letter to Columbus.

Hooray! Here is a song from the Andes to celebrate: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Fqj40XcHz0
A beautiful song. :-) And besides you can see Machu Picchu at the end. (Oh, and if you click on the comments from the person who put the video up, right under the video, and scroll down, there is a translation of the words. In case you don’t know Spanish and Quechua.)

Today I unintentionally managed to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day by going to a bookstore in which I found and bought three different books about them. They are the following, with the titles translated from Spanish:

    * “‘Just for Being Indians’ and other Mapuche Chronicles” by Pedro Cayuqueo
    * “Keu-Kenk: Indigenous Politics in Patagonia 1865-1965” by Liliana Pérez
    * “The Spirit of the Men of Tierra del Fuego” by Martín Gusinde

Unfortunately only the first one was written by an actual indigenous person (who, according to his bio, is a correspondent of Indian Country Today for South America,) but I was glad I could find one at all.
