The edges definitely had a strawberry tint while the moon was still low in the sky, which you can just make out in the photo. I can see how the name took hold in this case, especially if you also had some strawberries to eat while moon gazing and navel contemplating.

Tonight is the night of Acoustic Assault by Amateur Assassins, otherwise known as Fête de la Musique.

(It actually can be a lot of fun, and isn’t a bad idea, but does nicely illustrate the concept that intentionally causing sounds to come out of a musical instrument is not at all the same as music.)

The city of Chia-yi, Taiwan is on the 23rd parallel, so on June 21 and a few days either side, the sun is directly overhead. Several political and scientific monuments are sited on the 23rd, intentionally designed to cast long shadows every day of the year but one.

For anyone who spent their entire life in the northern hemisphere, it can be mindbending to see one’s own shadow pointing south. I’ve only seen it once, on a June vacation in the Philippines. I lived in Chia-yi for two years, but never went further south.

Every year, I make plans to head there, and every year, something kills off my plans, both last weekend and this weekend. One of these years, I’m finally going to go back and take a pictures and videos of these things. Sure, the southern cities will still be south of the sun for a week or two, but that’s not the same.
