35 Degrees South: Winter Evening.

From Lofty. All photos 1500 x 996, click for full size. I can smell the woodsmoke, one of the best and most comforting smells of winter.

5pm and the sun is about to set on the first clear winter’s day after a week of storms. The waxing moon drifts through the branches as does the neighbour’s wood smoke. The sun dips below a bank of cloud and leaves the city in the gathering gloom. Unheard from 15 miles away a ship glides down the gulf, not visible to the naked eye. Hot cauliflower soup and a glowing firebox await inside.

Well it was a beautiful day, cool and calm. The sky is clear again and the Southern cross is high above the horizon. Frosts will be severe tonight in the valleys over the other side of the range. On our ridge the cold air drains off so frosts are rare. Eight more days to the solstice.

It was summer hot here yesterday, but a late night thunderstorm broke the heat, and it’s a cloudy morn here, but it’s too early to tell if the cloudiness will burn off.

    Intense pictures.

    The first is eerie.

The blue smoke brings so much “feel” into the second picture.

Seconding rq about the cloud edges. Recently here the clouds and the red skies looked like glowing embers. I wasn’t able to catch it with my phone.
