SIGNAL BOOST: Counter the Horror

I’m sitting, typing, with tears flowing. A woman’s boyfriend, not in his own home, decided to pour boiling water over the woman’s son and his boyfriend, because he just didn’t like all that gay. Christ. That anyone could do such a thing, to deliberately cause such traumatic injury…this shit has to stop. We must be better than this. The story is here, and it’s graphic and beyond heart wrenching. Both of these young men have Go Fund Me accounts set up, to help counter the medical cost. Please, even if it’s just a dollar or the equivalent, please, help. If nothing else, it shows these young men that there are people who care, who accept them unreservedly. Anthony’s Burn Medical Fund and Marquez’s Burn Recovery Fund. There are graphic images of their injuries at the sites.

    Yes, it is. I think everyone knows how painful burns can be, and this is so much worse by magnitudes of order. The asshole who did it doesn’t really think he did anything wrong, “it was just water”. Yeah, boiling water. There aren’t existing hate laws where they are, but I hope to fuck they tack something extra on, because you don’t just find a convenient pot of boiling water -- there was clear premeditation.

    It’s beyond me, how anyone could look at a couple of sleeping 20something year olds and do such a thing.

    You can be sure the far right will claim the proposed “religious liberty law” in Georgia has nothing to do with this crime, which also took place in Georgia. Did it incited these assaults? Maybe, maybe not. But that law will certainly encourage and incite other acts of violence.

    Speaking of bad law in Georgia, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has issued a direct ultimatum to the governor:

    Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff had already expressed his displeasure with the impending passage of HB 757, which would allow groups to deny service to members of the LGBT community due to “sincerely held religious beliefs.”

    Back In February, Benioff tweeted a poll asking followers if Salesforce should move their Connections 2016 event out of the state is the bill passed.

    80 percent of respondents said “Yes.”

    Thursday, Salesforce issued a statement saying the company would not only pull the conference but proceed with moving business out of Georgia if the bill was signed.

    “Salesforce is calling on Governor Deal to veto HB 757 because the legislation creates an environment of discrimination and makes the state of Georgia seem unwelcoming to same-sex couples and the LGBTQ community,” the statement read. “If HB 757 is not vetoed and instead becomes law, Salesforce will have to reduce investments in Georgia, including moving the Salesforce Connections conference to a state that provides a more welcoming environment for the LGBTQ community.”

    And I thought his named sounded familiar for another reason, and looked it up. From Wikipedia:

    In 2014, Marc Benioff donated another $100 million to UCSF and Oakland Children’s Hospital (both now called Benioff Children’s Hospitals).

    I had noticed the name change -- I’m local plus Son had back surgery at Oakland when he was younger.

    Good for him. Maybe it will get through to these bigots that they will have to progress, whether they like it or not.
