Minnesota anti-gay-marriage campaign goes full Leviticus

See update below.

Professional homophobes just can’t stop getting themselves in trouble with Leviticus 20:13, the infamous Old Testament verse that prescribes the death penalty for gay sex. For some reason, they can’t avoid citing a passage that almost literally says “death to gays”, with no regard for the fact that this would be quite an ineffective public face for their movement if they have any interest in attracting wider support from everyday citizens.

The latest ones to step in it? Minnesota for Marriage, Minnesota’s official campaign to double-ban gay marriage, which is already prohibited. Nine hours ago, they posted this on their Facebook page:

“If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.”

~Leviticus 20:13

Jeremy Hooper later captured them telling other users “read your Bible” and “No one can deny the Word of God”, before deleting their own comments some time afterward.

This is a rather puzzling move for a campaign that’s supposedly for a constitutional amendment against marriage equality. Where does killing gays enter into that? Is their current campaign just one part of a broader initiative? If they’re going to go around saying gay people should be “put to death” as though the Bible should have some bearing on civil law, I think they need to explain exactly what it is they’re getting at. Until then, make sure everyone knows: Minnesota for Marriage said gay people should be put to death.

Minnesota for Marriage said gay people should be put to death.

Minnesota for Marriage said gay people should be put to death.

So let’s demand some answers.

Update: Minnesota for Marriage now claims that they were the victim of a hacking:

Good Morning – Last night our Deputy Campaign Manager, Andy Parrish’s personal email, Facebook, and Twitter accounts were hacked by an individual who posted the Leviticus verse below. We are currently working with Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, and Apple to see who hacked Andy’s account and who posted this message. Clearly we would never advocate for anyone to be put to death – We strongly believe that people are entitled to love whomever they choose, but they are not entitled to redefine marriage for all of society.

However, the Leviticus message is still on their Facebook page at this time. It wouldn’t be surprising if this was just a case of regret. Claiming gays should be put to death is not a new or unexpected thing coming from Christian homophobes.

So if it’s not a biblical edict they follow, what made the definition of marriage so sacred it can’t be changed?

“We strongly believe that people are entitled to love whomever they choose, but they are not entitled to redefine marriage for all of society.”

I wonder if they would oppose interracial marriages on the same grounds. Wasn’t the law changed to allow such marriages in the USA? Isn’t it just as big a redefinition of the legal term?

If they’re so big on “protecting the sanctity of traditional marriage”, they really ought to be out campaigning to make divorce illegal. There’s no Biblical provisions for divorcing someone, as far as I know.

Let’s see them try to get public support for that…

    1. 3.1

Jesus said that divorce was allowed but the woman could not remarry nor could a man marry a divorced woman because she is still the previous man’s property and would still be considered adultery.

      1. and there was me thinking that it was impossible to own a human being. Will somebody remind me why people pay attention to this book?

If they get to enforce that rule, then let’s make them enforce the rules the bible puts on heterosexual couples. The country will be in for a blood bath.

#1) Pre-marital sex for woman is a death offense, but strangely only for the woman:

    Deuteronomy 22:20-21
    New International Version (NIV)
20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the young woman’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done an outrageous thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.

Though a few lines later, it says:

    Deuteronomy 22:23-24
    New International Version (NIV)
23 If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, 24 you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death—the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man’s wife. You must purge the evil from among you.

So if engaged and has sex, then both the woman and man can be given a death sentence.

    2) Death sentence for both male and female adulterers.

    Deuteronomy 22:22
    New International Version (NIV)
22 If a man is found sleeping with another man’s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.

So if these religious idiots want to quote bible verses and uphold God’s laws, let them start with their own sexual orientation. Methinks that the US population will plummet.

So did the same person hack again to add the supporting comment “No one can deny the word of God”?
I also note that although they are saying they didn’t put up the verse, they aren’t actually condemning it, just that it isn’t something they are advocating. It could easily be something they believe in, but don’t want to push for because it will harm their primary message.

Jesus said “let those without sin cast the first stone” (to execute someone by stoning them). Since no one is without sin according to xtian theology, that means no capital punishment. The bible directly contradicts this, so these people are not xtians, they are some kind of weird make it up as you go along “bible-ists”.

Anyone that works on sunday should die according to the bible, and any women that has sex before marriage should be put to death as well, but I don’t see any of them advocating for not allowing sexually active women to not be able to marry, nor anyone that commits the deadly sin of having a barbeque on sunday (work according to the bible) put to any punishment at all.

    Flaming hypocrites.

As others have pointed out other times, I can’t help but wonder if people who cite Leviticus for their opposition to homosexuality also refrain from shellfish, the occasional bacon cheeseburger, getting tatoos, etc.

    My guess is “no”

  7. 10

Of course Leviticus also claims you shouldn’t be wearing cloth of two different kinds of material, and I’m betting a lot of them are wearing polycotton shirts or underwear.

Maybe they didnt mean hack in the computer security definition of the word but in the journalistic definition: “this was written by a talentless hack” which could apply equally to the facebook post or to the bible it was quoting
