2014: Let the games begin!

CB7501

I should be back to regular posting tomorrow. But I wanted to drop this post on a low traffic day and thank all you regs for the support, both financially and emotionally, you have provided during the toughest year of my adult life. It would have been far worse without you guys. I’ve been on vacay, in part keeping tabs on my mother, she’s having some health issue, but she was well enough to dig up the pic above. That’s a 19 year-old Steven with my beloved bike and windjammer faring in the bottom right corner, in 1982! So much life ahead!

Got great news this week: my blood counts are perfect, hemoglobin is now 15.5. It was 21 at the height of the leukemia scare. My doc told me yesterday that that kind of elevated hemo increases stroke risk by a factor on the order of a 100.  I celebrated with Four Loko last night. On a downside, I did finally lose my job, so I can now reveal I worked at Blizzard, maker of World of Warcraft. But it’s a new year, new hope, with health and a little luck, we can do a lot of good. Let the games begin!

I hope you have a better year, and get a very nice job.( fun challenging well paying with great heath care) It is sad Blizzard is such a terrible employer because I think WoW is quite fun. May you mom’s heath issue clear up in a good way.

    Steven,
I’m hoping that this will be a much better year for you!
Good luck with the job search.
I still think that you should apply at USAA.

    Blizzard’s loss.

Anything you can tell us about the No Secrets Anymore crew tapping into WoW in quest of terrororc-ists?

Blizzard? That explains a lot. Game dev companies are notorius for screwing loads of non-development employees all the damn time.

Blizzard’s golden child (WoW) hemorrhaged a lot last year (started around 10 million subscriptions and is down to something like 7.5 million subscriptions, and is probably only that high due to deep sale prices of WoW expansions at the end of the year), so not surprising that they are making a lot of cuts of personnel. I don’t hear a lot of good things about Diablo 3, and, personally at least, I was really underwhelmed with StarCraft 2 (even though I think it is pretty popular).

Unless Blizzard starts turning this trend around, you are probably better off not working there anyways, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there will be more waves of lay-offs over the next year or two. And if Titan isn’t a big improvement over WoW, I can see Blizzard spiraling into oblivion by 2020.

I very much hope that this year will be a great year for you. So sorry you lost your job, but now you can try to find a much better place to work. SO glad your health is better — what you went through was awful and scary! Hope you mother’s health gets and stays much better. Here’s to a wonderful 2014!
