Fall to your knees … and pray the gay away again

call-2-fall-logo-via-americablog

All ye good and true Americans, heed the command of Tony Perkins and his small government ideology — except when the government is in the bedroom enforcing modern-day Puritism. Hark, though the SCOTUS decision does not force states to recognize gay marriage, and Perkins tries to celebrate this crushing defeat divine victory, we still must pray what remains of the gay away — because nothing fails quite like prayer thus assuring Cleric Perkins an unending supply of outrage. Which he has quite the proven facility for turning into money: [Read more...]

WTF is accurate intercourse?

Welcome to my world, Texas, it’s a whole ‘nother country! Politically we’re highly diverse with growing enclaves of progressives and swelling ranks of disenfranchised former conservatives and independents. The two faster growing groups in that latter category are Latinos and women. For obvious reasons, powerful elements in the GOP would like to essentially enslave both one way or another. Therein lays the rub, we’re over represented in the bygone misogynist neoconfederate, good-ole-boy era. Here’s another dry log tossed on that fire of burning stupidity: [Read more...]

Rick Perry tries to school Wendy Davis from his Bible meet up

Texas Governor Rick Perry appearing at a fundamentalist nat’l right to life event concerned trolled state senator Wendy Davis this week after her successful filibuster of his favorite chestnut policies. I.e., regulating women’s health services clinics out of existence and making abortion illegal after 20 weeks for any reason. That kind of willful ignorance and ideological blindness could easily result in even more extreme legislation, like person-hood amendments that could make treating ectopic pregnancy a first degree murder. Cathy Miller at Texas Freedom Network shot right back: [Read more...]

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean no one is following you

Seems a secret group with hidden motives has been quietly signing up to monitor dozens of prominent atheists on Twitter — I knew I was being followed! We even have a pic of the perps above! Clearly, they’re dangerous subversives. Well, before this turns into a massive scandal orchestrated from the Oval Office, it turns out the motive was not sinister. That’s University of Illinois psychology professor Jesse Preston and grad student co-conspirator Ryan Ritter. They’ve just wrapped an analysis of Twitter culture, in their case, atheist vs religious tweets. Here’s some highlights: [Read more...]

Jesus “weeps” over DOMA

Zombie candidate and eternal right-wing pundit Mike Huckabee knows a thing or two about Jesus. The former Arkansas governor doesn’t think his Lord and Savoir is perturbed by tax cuts for zillionaires, sweetheart contracts for war profiteers, or budget cuts for those struggling with the real world consequences of Huckabee’s fave policies. But when it comes to marriage equality, Huckabee knows Jesus is so emotionally invested in denying same sex couples equal rights he cannot divinely compose himself today. [Read more...]

SCOTUS rules DOMA unconstitutional

9:04 AM PT: The Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law allowing Federal and state governments to discriminate against legally married same-sex couples, is unconstitutional, the Supreme Court has ruled. It’s a 5-4 ruling. Roberts and Scalia and dissent. Kennedy has written the ruling. The focus is equal protection.

9:03 AM PT: SCOTUSblog: “DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment.”

9:05 AM PT: Here’s the opinion.

9:06 AM PT: NBC’s Pete Williams suggests that DOMA ruling is a big enough ruling that it may take some time for the justices to read their opinions, which means the Prop. 8 ruling might take a little longer to be revealed.

9:08 AM PT:

NBC’s Pete Williams: “This was a very broad ruling…that can be used by proponents of same sex marriage to attack laws in other states”
