Another day, another fake climate change scam

This is making the rounds over the last week, a pic from Time Mag showing scientists worried about global cooling in 1977 and then global wamring now. How to explain it? Answer below the fold courtesy of Greg Laden.
There were some scattered articles in the 70s talking about ice ages, but in this case the explanation is even simpler. It’s fake!

I was just reading a letter from U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee in the San Antonio Express News.
These are some of the things that this climate-change denier is saying:
“The highly regarded National Academy of Sciences’ recent review of the Obama administration’s draft National Climate Assessment said that “Even with continued advances in climate science, significant uncertainties about these changes will remain.” It went on to say that “it would be helpful to see more explicit discussion of the uncertainties that are inherent in the report’s projections of future climatic changes.”

The column’s author ominously claims, “We are out of time,” urging President Obama to bypass Congress to take action to curb U.S. emissions. Limiting the scientific debate by saying we know everything we need to know is wrong and dangerous. The earth’s climate system is extremely complex and the only thing that is certain is the economic damage of precipitous action.”

The frightening thing is that this guy is actually is the chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee.
If you read the comments about this letter, you will find that many of the wing-nut commentators referred to this debunked ’70s theory about a coming ice age.
The rubes believe this stuff because they want to believe it, and then they accuse those of us who actually read and follow what real scientists report as doing the same thing.
    I’m so disgusted with them.

Sorry. The first panel reminds me too much of this. I’m having a difficult time maintaining an appropriate sense of outrage.
