It’s Obama vs Romney in 2012

Not that there was much doubt, but Romney seems to have sewed up the GOP nom, pulling ahead of all challengers with an insurmountable lead in delegates and sweeping DC, Maryland, and even Wisconsin last night:

(CSM) — Mr. Romney won at least 83 delegates in Tuesday’s contests, according to the Associated Press. That gives him 655 of the 1,144 needed for nomination. Rick Santorum has 278, Newt Gingrich 135, and Ron Paul 51. Romney’s closest rival, ex-Pennsylvania Senator Santorum, would need to win 80 percent of the remaining delegates to clinch the nomination, according to the AP. Given that most of the state contests to come award their delegates proportionately in some manner, that’s a close-to-impossible task.

Makes you wonder why Santorum is bothering to stay in. But egos and hope die hard in politics just like anywhere else.

There’ll be a lot of criticism of Romney here and around the progressive blogosphere over the next few months. What’s sad is it doesn’t need to be that way. The pro-choice, healthcare fixin gay rights champion Mitt Romney that used to exist has been terminated. Now we have this flip-flopping spineless weasel who lies point-blank into the camera even when there are recent videos and op-eds of the same guy taking a diametrically opposite view. The worst part is, in every case, the new view is worrisome or downright revolting. Steal medicare from people who have paid in for 30 years and give it to billionaires, make corporations people and make people chattel, repeat the exact same policies that created the worst economic calamity since the Great Depression. Take away reproductive rights from women. In issue after issue it’s as though Romney is running for Douchebag in Chief.

I don’t think Romney really believes the crap he’s saying, I think it’s just sort of the “thing” with the GOP nowadays; appealing to the extreme right. Once Romney grabs the nomination, he and his campaign managers will probably realize that they’ve completely lost the moderates, and Romney will leap aaalllll the way back to center-right.

Of course, that sort of flip-flop is exactly the problem. It means he can’t stand on any issues, and will lie and pander for no reason other than winning. Democrats won’t support him, the far-right won’t support him, and if the moderates are intelligent enough (just enough) to realize that he’s as big a wembler as he is, then there’s nothing anyone can do. It’s really a lose-lose situation for the GOP this season.

Santorum stays in to establish himself as the default choice for 2016 – just as Romney did in 2008, for 2012.

Romney stays in because he thinks he’s entitled to be President.
Gingrich stays in to boost his market value.
Paul stays in because he’s a fruitcake who wouldn’t recognise reality if it bit him on the bum.

    Exactly right.

Romney changing positions won’t be a problem — just turn him upside down and shake him!

Just noticed that my browser’s spellchecker recognizes “Romney” and “Gingrich”, but thinks “Santorum” is misspelled. Cool!

Romney never believed in any of the stances he takes, either now or in the past. He is nothing but a whore for votes. He has no integrity whatsoever. His ethics consist of what is advantageous for him at the moment.

So why did Democrats vote 44% in favour of Santorum in Wisconsin? I assume for shits and giggles…

I think the Quantum Theory of Mitt Romney in the NYtimes picked it up perfectly. Is Schrodingers cat dead or alive? Is Romney a moderate or a tea-bagger? Open the box and find out.
