Very poor performance by Romney

I understand what poor Mittens was referring to when he said in part — and quoted in isolation– “I’m not concerned about the very poor.” Nevertheless you’d think a serious candidate would never let those words cross their lips in that order no matter what. Even Limbaugh found the gaffe hard to comprehend:

(CBS) — Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh noticed, as well. “Everyone knows what he was trying to say,” Limbaugh observed, “but he didn’t say it. He makes himself a target with this stuff. He comes across at the prototypical rich Republican. … It’s gonna make it harder and harder and harder to go after Obama.” Romney’s comments also gave an opening for his Republican opponents to attack.

Yes, but these are Republicans—appearance matters, reality doesn’t.

That’s why it doesn’t matter how many times you get busted blowing other men on meth in airport bathrooms; what matters is how hard you lambaste homosexuals.

What’s more, Romney’s explanation why he’s not worried about the poor is “because they have a social safety net”. I thought Republicans weren’t supposed to acknowledge that this safety net is even necessary? Let alone that it is actually functional?

Even considered in the context of Romney’s full statement, the remark is troubling for a number of reasons.
    .
The very poor are worse off than the middle class Romney claims to care about. Duh.
    .
While Romney says he will maintain the safety net which helps the very poor, his proposed tax plan (in fact the tax plan proposed by every current Republican candidate) will cut revenue, making it difficult to believe that the safety net will be maintained.
    .
Especially since the government programs most hated by the Republican base are those which help the poor. Welfare? for the lazy. Unemployment benefits? Those people aren’t even trying to find jobs. Etc.
