9-year-old boy chained and tortured in church for weeks: This is why I hate religion.

A 9-year-old boy was rescued from a church in Ogun state Nigeria, after weeks of being chained and tortured.  The Celestial church of Christ had been keeping the emaciated child in chains and tortured him in a bid to rid him of demonic possession. This was said to be with the consent of the child’s father, a pastor.

9 year old boy

According to Premium Times

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES

On the 22nd of July 2016, at about 10:30hrs at Ajibawo in Ado Odo OTA Division 2, NSCDC officers rescue a boy, named Taiwo Korede, aged nine years old, who had been chained for weeks at Celestial Church of Christ key of Joy Parish Ajiwo.

“The case has since been transfer to the appropriate authority for further investigation.”

I wish I could say I was surprised at this news, but truth be told, I wasn’t. I mean, I grew up with this. It was a daily occurrence. I had been a victim of such abuse myself. My parents attended Celestial church of Christ. I saw this evil every day. I was a victim of this evil.

I remember being called a witch by pastors and prophets. I vividly remember the many prayers and beatings with palm fronds and brooms at the Bar Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos. Many children suffered this fate. We were all randomly accused of being witches or being at risk of initiation into witchcraft because we shared or accepted food from our classmates who according to those prophets, are witches and wizards and wanted to initiate us into witchcraft.

Our parents fell for such bullshit, because well, RELIGION. They thought they were protecting us from demons, therefore they let the church abuse us.

imagesCAZR3ST9 imagesCA6IH889

It is especially prominent amongst poor families. The children are blamed for using demonic powers to keep their parents in poverty. Children of rich people in the church were hardly accused of witchcraft. It seems witchcraft is a disease only poor people catches.

Also, if the parents were once well to do, and had a prosperous business, but started having financial problems and business troubles, no one bothered to blame the flailing economy, the church just put the blame on the vulnerable members in the family. This could be the house help, the young maid, the orphaned child from the village living with the family, the step-child who wants to ruin the new marriage, the old mother in law, and don’t forget that wrinkled, old woman on the street, surely with her haggard look, she must be a witch!

Yes, this is the reality of religion. This is the reality I grew up in. This is what I was indoctrinated into. This is why I hate Religion. This is Why I Speak Out Against Religion.

So, a 9-year-old emaciated child in chains, tortured by the church isn’t really new or news to me. If I am being honest, the only part I found surprising was the fact that a government agency rescued the child. I guess that must be a step forward.

9 year old

However, have charges being brought against the callous perpetrators of this crime? Well, they did issue a statement that they are investigating the matter.

Do I have faith in the system? NO, I don’t. If the people in charge of the case are religious believers, (which they most likely are), and they believe there are demons, witches, wizards, and all sorts of religious and spiritual myths, they are not likely to give the case the thorough justice it deserves. They might not agree with the measures taken by the church, but they could still be cautious around the child because they also might believe he has demonic powers. That is the power of religion. And that is why I hate religion.

People might act all surprised at seeing this poor 9-year-old boy in chains, but these surprised hypocrites cheer on their pastors every Sunday as another child is accused of witchcraft and abused in front of the congregation. They sit there and marvelled at how powerful their Daddy in Christ is, as he battled these demons out of these poor “Possessed” children. Never mind that they can’t actually see the demons he is casting out, but well, they see how he is beating the demons out of these children, so they cheer him on. That is the absurdity of religion.  And that is why I hate religion.

Not too long ago, when one of the most prominent and richest pastor in Nigeria, Pastor David Oyedepo, physically attacked a 14-year-old girl during a church service watched by tens of thousands of church members, no one blinked an eyelid, in fact, they all clapped for him. Yes, adults cheered on this good for nothing pastor while he slapped a girl, because according to him, she was a witch, but the girl boldly responded that she was a witch for Jesus. The audacity of her response made the Pastor Oyedepo even more furious and he physically lashed out at this poor teenage orphaned girl. And his congregation applauded him.

This atrocity was captured on video and posted on YouTube.  I made a video where I urged people to slap some sense into Pastor David Oyedepo. I pointed out that hitting the poor girl on accusation of witchcraft was child abuse. However, what did the silly Christians and his sheep say?  They came out enmasse to defend their pastor, citing silly bible verses like “Thou shall not touch my anointed”. I received a lot of abuse, curses and threats on the Blog post and YouTube video. Every now and then, I still wake up to one threat or the other on the video and blog post, with Christians telling me how I am gonna die for daring to speak against the Man of God, their precious Daddy in Christ.

There isn’t much outcry in the media about this latest atrocity and I am guessing it is because it is not an Islam vs Christian crime.

Also, child abuse in the name of God is pretty the standard, so what else is new? Maybe what’s new is the chains and padlock? But as I said, for those of us who grew up attending spiritual churches, that is nothing new. Vulnerable people suffering from various degree of mental health issues were often brought to church by concerned family members, cos well, it is easier and cheaper to pretend that they are possessed by demons than to try to get them the healthcare they need. After all, quality healthcare isn’t cheap in Africa. There is no National Health Service (NHS) or Obamacare in Nigeria. So, the church, mosques and shrines provide these services with a serving of padlocks, chains and torture as standard treatment.

More so, there is stigma attached to being an Aro mental health hospital patient. ‘Aro’, the name of a popular mental health centre in Nigeria, is often used as a derogatory, abusive word. When someone tells you “You belong in Aro”,  you are likely to end up in fistfights because, well , they just called you crazy and that must not go unchallenged, mostly with fists. Abliesm alert. No one wants to be called a mad man or mad woman.  You stand your ground and defend your precious family name. That is the extent of the stigma attached to mental health problems. Religious houses like the Church, mosques and shrines capitalise on this.  People don’t want the outside world to know a family member is suffering from some mental health issues, so they take them to a spiritual church, mosque or shrine, and just look the other way as the pastors, imam, bablawo or voodoo master chain them down, torture and beat the so called demons out of them.

My heart breaks for this poor 9-year-old boy. I am happy that he has been rescued. I hope he gets the justice that he deserves. I hope he gets good counselling. I hope he gets a better life. However, I am not holding my breath because considering that his parents did this to him, and there is no known social service care in Nigeria that watch out for the well-being of children, especially when they are not orphans, this nightmare is far from over for this poor kid. I mean, wouldn’t he still be released into the care of the father who did this to him in the first place? I shudder to think of the further emotional and psychological if not physical abuse this child would still face, not just from his parents, but from the church members and the very religious society he lives in.

According to latest reports

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the boy was chained by his own father, a pastor in the church, who is currently on the run.

“The police operatives of the Command attached to Onipanu Division, Otta, on Friday, 23rd July, rescued one Korede Taiwo, M, 9, from where he had been chained on his neck to a heavy log of wood in a room by his biological father Pastor Taiwo Francis, m, of THE KEY OF JOY CELESTIAL CHURCH, Ajibawo area, via Atan Otta, in Ado Odo Otta Local Government Area of Ogun State for more than a month,” he said.

He said the child’s step-mother, Kehinde Taiwo, who has been arrested by the police, accused the boy of stealing.

This is why I hate religion.

This is why I speak out against religion.

This is why I think being a decent/moderate Christian or Muslim does not absolve anyone from the havoc religion causes in the society. Being a decent person does not mean your religion is not harmful.

This is why I think religion is a cancer.

This is why I think we all need to do our part in making sure our society evolve to a stage where religion is nothing but a faraway distance memory in the minds of the new generation.

Let’s get rid of religion and all that useless belief in witchcraft, demons, talking snakes, flying donkeys, walking on water, hell fire, paradise and that enticing delusion of 72 virgins waiting in heaven for jihadists.

Evolve, flush religion out of your system. Kick religion in its mythical ass. The world would be a better place if we  all gave religion the red card.

France under terrorist attack again; 80 dead and counting.

A lorry driver intentionally ploughed through a crowd in Nice, France during the Bastille celebration.  Accordingfrance to news reports, the driver deliberately crashed into people and emerged, shooting sporadically. There were reports of guns and grenades inside the lorry.  Also, identity papers of French-Tunisian were said to be found in the lorry.

According to various news reports, the death toll has reached 77 and rising. Many of the victims were children.

The murderer was shot dead by police officers.

This is beyond appalling. I am lost for words to describe these senseless killings.

And to think some despicable religious monsters are celebrating these latest killings on social media, happily counting the number of rising victims and praising Allah on Twitter!

Really, This world is not my home.

The French President, Francois Hollande, in a press conference said-

France as a whole is under the threat of Islamic terrorism. We have to demonstrate absolute vigilance and show determination that is unfailing.

France has been hit by tragedy once again. This monstrosity of using a lorry to deliberately kill people, many people who only came out to celebrate their national day.

France is in tears; it is hurting but it is strong. And She will be stronger. Always stronger than the fanatics who wish to hurt us.

My heart is with France and all those who have lost loved ones and with those eagerly waiting for news of their injured loved ones.396079_10150480627647772_276988682771_8924818_2014902550_n

We’ve really got a long way to go to rid this planet of monsters who live amongst us whose only ambition is to inflict pain and sorrow on innocent people under the guise of their religion and politics.

Yes, Religion is a cancer that we must tackle.

Yes, Islam deserves no respect from me.

Yes, religion is an instrument of oppression, very useful in convincing people to commit atrocities especially with political incentives. After all those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.  As Blaise Pascal said, “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.”

Macheted and Beaten to a Pulp for not Fasting: Happy Ramadan!

Just a few days after a 74-year-old woman was beaten to death by angry Muslim youths in Kano state, Nigeria, for alleged blasphemy, another similar incident with almost same fatal outcome happened in neighbouring Kaduna state. Francis Emmanuel, a 41-year-old man was attacked by irate Muslim youths for not observing the Ramadan fasting, even though he was not a Muslim.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Francis Emmanuel, a carpenter, reportedly said

I went to buy wood to do some work. When I came back I bought food to eat. As I was eating about six Hausa boys came and asked me whether I am a Muslim or a christian. I did not answer them. They asked why am I not fasting? I told them that I am not a Muslim.

“Before I knew it, one of them slapped me. As I stood up, the rest came and surrounded me and started attacking me with knives. I don’t know them. Nobody could come to my aid because of the type of dangerous knives they were carrying.
“They used cutlasses scissors and knives on me. I became unconscious, I don’t even know who brought me to the hospital.

Beaten unconscious for daring to eat during Ramadan period and he was not even a Muslim! Let’s be clear, even if he was a Muslim, he has the right to choose whether or not to starve himself to please his Skydaddy. No one should have the right or audacity to demand that another observe a religious rite.

In some parts of Northern Nigeria, we have had cases where people were beaten up for drinking alcohol even when they were not Muslims and therefore not bound by the Sharia Law.  Shops selling alcohol have been vandalised because …well, Sharia law. This descent into a state of lawlessly in the name of religion needs to be checked before it gets to a point of no return.

Is their precious Ramadan not supposed to be the “Holy Month of Peace”? Unleashing violence on people who chose not to fast while you starve to endear yourself to your sky daddy brings a whole new meaning to the saying “A hungry man is an angry man”.

Which is why I despair when we are told to be politically correct and wish our Muslims br407171_2699056189303_1043602147_2867789_1434976931_nothers and sisters a Happy Ramadan. Why on earth would I want to encourage people to starve themselves in the name of a Skydaddy?

Happy Ramadan indeed, I’d rather we rid the world of religion in all its barbaric forms.

Nigeria: 74-Year-Old Woman Beaten To Death By Muslim Youths For Blasphemy

It pains me that every time I had to write about Nigeria, it is always some gory story. I try as much as possible to steer clear of these negative reports, however, no matter how fast I run, i can’t outrun the truth. It is painful but gory religious news are all that seems to come out of Nigeria.

There are a few important stories that came out of Nigeria these past few weeks that I shied away from writing about, cos well, I just despair when it comes to Nigeria and it really causes me a great deal of depression to engage with religious fanatics, especially religious Nigerian fanatics. Such encounter is like a glimpse into the mind of prehistoric cavemen.

It seems I am not allowed to talk about the tragedy in Orlando without acknowledging the tragedy in my own backyard (even though Nigeria has not been my backyard for a few years now). There is always that one person or persons, keen to point out that I am more sympathetic to issues outside the country than within. But how is that surprising? After all, gory religious happenings are the norm in Nigeria, so what else is new?  In my next few blog posts, I shall endeavour to cover a few of these religion motivated gory stories from Nigeria. First, let’s talk about the case of the woman that was allegedly beheaded for speaking against Prophet Mohammed. [Read more…]

Why I identify as an Atheist : Secular Voices of Color

Below is my video contribution for ‘Secular Voices of Colour‘. As the project coordinator, Sincere Karibo stated

Secular Voices of Color is a unique opportunity to spread awareness of and focus on the stories minority representation of nonbelievers.

My video contribution is transcribed below. Happy Viewing!

My name is Yemisi Ilesanmi, I am a Nigerian, grew up in Nigeria and now resident in UK. I was born into a Christian family. Nigeria is the largest black nation on earth and it is one of the most religious in the world. Growing up I decided if I was going to be a Christian, damn right I was going to be the best Christian ever. My parents attended the spiritual church known more as white garment church. It was always about speaking in tongues, prophesy, exorcism and all that crap that comes with believing in a skydaddy and the existence of evil spirits. [Read more…]

No, Atheism is not a leap of faith or a descent into bigotry!

When a friend tagged me in an article in the Guardian titled, ‘My atheism does not make me superior to believers. 396822_165455010225354_100002825693663_217839_1616784218_nIt’s a leap of faith too”, by Ijeoma Oluo, I knew from the second part of the title not to expect much and as predicted, the article turned out to be arrant nonsense.

For one, it reads like a piece someone just figuring out that there is no Santa Claus, Easter bunny, Tooth Fairy or Bogey Man would write. It is quite surprising that the writer, a self-proclaimed atheist, could not differentiate between faith and knowledge.

For this reason, I wouldn’t take seriously anything the writer has to say about atheism, however, i would endeavour to analyse her article.

She wrote-

I didn’t come to this conclusion because the story of a man waking from the dead made no sense – I wasn’t an overly analytical child. I still enthusiastically believed in Santa Claus and the Easter bunny. But when I searched myself for any sense of belief in a higher power, it just wasn’t there. I wanted it to be there – how comforting to have a God. But it wasn’t there, and it isn’t to this day.

This sounds creepily like a gay person wishing they were not gay. Atheism is not a feeling, it is not a sexual orientation or emotional/ sexual attraction, it is not the spooky feeling that some people insist they get that tells them a ghost is in the room. [Read more…]

Just another baby born with a bible: Which came first, the baby or the bible?

bible baby

A woman has allegedly given birth to a bible and a baby girl in Osun state, Nigeria. Just another baby born holding a holy book. Last time, it was a baby allegedly born holding a Quran. There was also that case of a baby born holding prayer imagebeads, this time it is a baby born with a bible, all in Nigeria.

I wonder why they are never born with a cure for cancer, a recipe for the best Jollof Rice or at least a lottery ticket that would change the lives of their prayerful parents! Such bullshit stopped being news to me a long time ago, and this malady wouldn’t have caught my attention if not for the sad fact that it was given national coverage on NTA as prime time news! Yes, it made national news coverage on paper and TV, not as satire or a joke but as real news!

According to NTA, Adijatu Babalola, a mother of three, gave birth to a baby girl after she had delivered a bible in a mysterious way. [Read more…]

Planned Parenthood Clinic Shooting: Religious Assholes, Vile Politicians and Dipshit Media

I was out when I briefly saw the headlines for the Colorado shooting today; apparently, three people, including a police officer, have been confirmed dead and many more injured.

The shooter, now identified as Robert Lewis Dear, is a 57-year-old white man from North Carolina.

According to reports

“Lt. Catherine Buckley of the Colorado Springs Police Department said the gunman, described as wearing a long coat and armed with a rifle, gave up after officers inside the building shouted at him. He previously had been firing at police who entered the facility.

Buckley also said the unidentified man had brought “items” with him inside the building and left some outside, meaning officers had to make sure they were not “any kind of devices.”

“The man apparently began his deadly spree at the Planned Parenthood building, although it was not clear if his motive was related to the organization.

“We don’t have any information on this individual’s mentality, or his ideas or ideology,” Buckley said.

Interesting how they are not eager to jump to conclusions about this shooter’s ideas and ideology. This is white cis [Read more…]

Natural Disasters are certainly not a time to thank God!

Lately, there has been no end to the bad news making the rounds so much that watching the news has become depressing. Nepal suffered an earthquake that killed thousands with many entombed in their own houses, hotels and museums. More than half a million people have been rendered homeless. The earthquake also triggered an avalanche that hit Mount Everest leaving many seriously injured and some dead.

One cannot even begin to imagine the terror those people must have felt in their dying hour. It is heartwrenching to see the pains on the faces of the victims’ families as they confront the galling reality that their loved ones are buried underneath all that rubble and their bodies might never be recovered for proper burials.

The pains etched on the faces of survivors tell stories of horrors and gratitude. It seems, in the midst of the sorrows, pains, deaths, and survival; we still must celebrate life. Every life saved amidst these ruins is a cause for celebration. Every dead body pulled out is a cause for sorrow.

To die in such horrific and agonising manner is painful to imagine. In most cases, death really is not as much the problem as the manner and cause of it. [Read more…]

Chapel Hill Shootings: Condemning religion does not an Islamophobe make, Atheism does not a superior moral being make

The gruesome murders of Deah Barakat, 23, Yusor Abu-Salha, 21, and Razan Abu-Salha, 19, all Muslims, in the gun-toting hand of Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, an atheist, is appalling and a tragedy. I cannot begin to imagine what the families of these victims must be going through.

According to the law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, Tuesday’s altercation started after Hicks found a car belonging to one of the victims in what he claimed was his parking space. Then Hicks went to the victim’s condo and shot all three people in a confrontation.

Hicks turned himself in to police Tuesday night and is being held in the Durham County Jail without bond. He is cooperating with investigators, police said Wednesday morning.

This incident had nothing to do with religion or the victims’ faith, but in fact was related to the longstanding parking disputes that my husband had with the neighbors

I have seen and heard him be very unfriendly to a lot of people in this community,” Samantha Maness, another resident of the Finley Forest development, told the Times. She said that Hicks displayed an “equal opportunity anger” and that he made “everyone feel uncomfortable and unsafe.

The Charlie Hebdo tragedy: The five crowds that are getting it wrong

In the wake of the atrocious murder of Charlie Hedbo’s journalists by Islamist fundamentalists which led to #Jesuischarlie, it is sad that some people have chosen this horrendous time to falsely accuse the magazine of the very thing it stands against; Racism, Sexism, Homophobia and Misogyny.

As Libby Nelson wrote in Charlie Hebdo: its history, humor, and controversies:

Charlie Hebdo is known for its cartoons, which are often raunchy and provocative, whether they depicted the Prophet Mohammed or portrayed the Pope performing holy communion with a condom.

Charlie Hebdo’s editor, Stéphane Charbonnier, who was murdered in the attack, described the newspaper’s positions in 2012 as left-wing, secular, and atheist.

Below are 5 different crowds that are getting it wrong and why.

1- The “Charlie Hebdo is racist and sexist” crowd

This crowd eagerly post some of Charlie Hedbo’s cartoons with the aim of accusing the magazine of racism and L4057-1011.0sexism, without caring to dig into the context.

The context of Charlie Hebdo’s Parodies/cartoons is easily understood by the French but not easily understood by outsiders, unless they are conversant with French politics. Some of these cartoons can be viewed and understood under the piece What are some of Charlie Hebdo’s most famous cartoons?

At first glance, these cartoons might appear racist, sexist, and ill-thought-out, but after reading the contexts, this is usually not the case.

So, “What was the context of Charlie Hebdo’s cartoon depicting Boko Haram sex slaves as welfare queens?”

This is what Libby Nelson has to say:

Charlie Hebdo covers often combined two unrelated stories to make a satirical point. In the context of the magazine’s leftist politics, this seems to be about spoofing not Nigerian trafficking victims, but French welfare critics, who have argued that France should cut welfare programs to prevent immigrant women from exploiting them. The cover, in this view, seems to say, “Hey, welfare critics, you’re so heartless that you probably think that even Nigerian sexual slavery victims are money-grubbing ‘welfare queens.

This is what French people have to say about it on Quora [Read more…]

New Year Resolution? Do away with God and Religion

A perfect New Year resolution would be to do away with God and all its attendant delusions. Most importantly, it would mean you no longer407171_2699056189303_1043602147_2867789_1434976931_n give a stamp of approval to all the ills, harms and atrocities perpetrated in the name of God under the umbrella of Religion as commanded in the Hoy book, be it the Bible, Quran or any other deluded book, aka the Word of God.

In recent years, we have seen how much harm and havoc God delusion can bring to humanity. It is not just about hearing old stories about how God sanctioned and even commanded slavery, genocides, plagues, jihads, stoning to death of non-virgin wives and gays, we cannot in good conscience, continue to say “Oh that was days of old”.

In recent years:

  1. We have seen innocent people beheaded in the name of God to the shouts of “Allahu Akbar”.
  2. We have seen children blown up in schools in the name of God.
  3. We have seen young girls kidnapped and married off in the name of God.
  4. We have witnessed young girls shot in the head for daring to seek an education.
  5. We have seen people blowing one another up because of God‘s promised land to his ‘Chosen people’.
  6. We have seen lesbians, gays, bisexuals and Trans oppressed, bullied, forced to commit suicide, thrown in jail, and even stoned to death all in the name of God and Religion.
  7. We have seen women denied equal rights because the word of God says women must be submissive.
  8. We have seen women denied the right to have an abortion even when the life of the mother is in danger because, well God, and soul.
  9. We have seen right before our eyes, wars and suicide bombings induced by people fighting over whose God is better.
  10. We have seen these atrocities, discrimination, and oppression being justified with quotes from the very book we look up to as the perfect word of God.

Islam Deserves No Respect From Me

No religion deserves respect from me. However, when in this modern age, a particular religion is always grabbing the headlines when its adherents kidnap and open 396079_10150480627647772_276988682771_8924818_2014902550_nfire on innocent people in shopping malls and cafes while screaming, “There is no other God but Allah”, and murder children for simply daring to seek an education, I can say, Islam deserves nothing but contempt. My heart bleeds for all the innocent lives lost in the latest atrocities committed in the name of religion and a mythical skydaddy.

No lie or myths sold as truth deserves respect and all religions are myths and lies. However, when lies are used as brainwashing tool to harm innocent people and cause havoc in the society, that lie deserves nothing but contempt and condemnation from decent people.

Child marriages, subjugation of women, persecution of LGBTs, stoning of women found guilty of adultery, public flogging as punishment for drinking alcohol, cutting off hands as punishment for stealing,  jungle justice, Jihads, Fatwas and beheading for blasphemy are just a few things of my least favourite things about Islam and its holy book, Quran.

What do we expect from followers of the Abrahamic God who took pride in ordering the execution of children? Genocides were a thing Skydaddy was proud of, and some of his delusional adherents are still proud to follow his sadistic orders. [Read more…]
