Chow mein is the cause of rape

Haryana Khap blames consumption of chow mein for rapes.

A khap panchayat, or a traditional socio-political administration and organization, in Haryana’s Jind district has blamed consumption of chow mein behind the growing incidents of rapes in the state saying it leads to hormonal imbalance.

“To my understanding, consumption of fast food contributes to such incidents. Chow mein leads to hormonal imbalance evoking an urge to indulge in such acts,” said Jitender Chhatar, a resident of Jind’s Chhatar village and thua khap panchayat leader.
“You also know the impact of chow mein, which is a spicy food, on our body. Hence, our elders also advised to consume light and nutritious food,” Chhatar added.

Last week, khap panchayats had evoked outrage after Sube Singh, a khap leader, advocated lowering of age of marriage for girls from 18 years to 16 years on the grounds that young girls are vulnerable to rapes and should be married off earlier.

Om Prakash Chautala, leader of Opposition, too backed the khaps’ demand while Congress leaders including Haryana congress chief Phool Chand Mullana and education minister Geeta Bhukkal had stated that growing rape cases were a conspiracy against the state government.

Dharamvir Goyat, another Congress leader, had sparked off a controversy by saying that 90% of the rape cases were consensual.

This is incredible India! A mixture of modernity and barbarity, luxury and poverty, innovation and tradition, rationality and irrationality, democracy and idiocracy, the future and the past. Women are getting education, they’re working and earning money. But the society is still unbelievably misogynistic. Women get raped everyday, get sex-trafficked everyday, get killed everyday. Everyday women get murdered for not being able to pay dowry, or for not being able to give birth to a son or for not being able to cook good food. Most people do not blame rapists for raping women. They do not blame male domination or misogyny for rapes. Most people still blame women for being raped by men. The good news is, Haryana’s powerful authorities do not blame victims for rapes, but the bad news is, they blame poor chow mein for rapes. Rapists are set free.

education minister Geeta Bhukkal had stated that growing rape cases were a conspiracy against the state government.

I have no decent words for this person. Not for any of them, but this “victim is the criminal” stance is particularly disgusting.

And are there really more rapes, or are they just being reported more? Whichever, the analysis and solutions offered by these people are horrible and stupid. And some are mutually contradictory, which just illuminates their scattershot approach to denial.

Chow mein is a conspiracy against the state government, which can be solved by lowering the legal minimum age of marriage for women. Plausible, right?

In traditional Indian culture, people believed certain foods like onions and garlic were “stimulating” and could lead to lust. To this day some vegetarian Hindus as well as Buddhists from other parts of Asia (e.g. China) avoid foods like onion and garlic. I think there may be a connection to this panchayat leader’s bizarre claim that chow mein is linked to rape. In many villages people still rely on traditional knowledge, so I imagine the belief that eating spicy food could turn you into a sexually crazed violent criminal is somehow related.

Or maybe this guy just made the whole thing up. Who knows.

Please, please, let’s not let this guy get together with Todd Akin & Joe Walsh to compare medical notes.

Does the association of a Chinese dish with immoral behavior reflect ancient ethnic hostilities?
