Crazy Acoustics

A friend (thank you, Jim!) introduced me to the music in the tank.

Check this out:

The tank is an old steel industrial water tank that has been repurposed as a recording location. They have a page [Tank]

Back in 2011 I spent a few days wandering around Chernobyl It has since opened to the public! But Ukraine may not be where you want to be right now, depending on where you’re from.

One of the many memorable things was the sound-space of the interior of the partially constructed cooling tower for Reactor #6. I only recorded minor sounds, but later we found a pipe and make some terrific whanging noises against the main coolant run. By ‘we’ I mean ‘I’, which is why I don’t have a recording of it: my hands were full. I was spinning around like an idiot trying to think of a way to convey the scale of the place. It’s gigantic. The little rectangular impressions in the concrete: that’s the outline of 4’x8′ sheets of plywood that were used to make forms for the structure.
