Jon Stewart tells journalists to take up a new hobby: journalism

He appears on his old friend Stephen Colbert’s show again and gets back in the groove and was in fine form, with he and Colbert doing some improvisational comedy along with the set bits. My favorite line was when he told the media that their hopes that Donald Trump would become more presidential after he was elected was absurd because “70-year old men don’t get less cranky or racist as time goes by”. I totally agree with him that the hostility between Trump and the media may be the best thing that happened to the latter.

That got a kind of agonized grunting laugh out of me. Stewart is still very much on his game.

Why haven’t liberals been more upset at Jon Stewart? He was among the loudest in prodding and practically (even literally) begging Donald Trump to run for president. I know it was because he thought Trump would certainly lose, but don’t current events make anyone else uneasy about Stewart’s actions?

If I thought that Stewart’s goading had any impact on Trump’s decision to run or his eventually victory I’d be inclined to agree with you but that’s not the case. He certainly got things very wrong but he doesn’t bear responsibility for what happened.

I would never claim that Jon Stewart has singular responsibility for something like Trump. But I don’t think it can be reasonably denied that he had an influential voice in American politics. At the very least, his show produced a lot of water cooler talk.

Trump won because of his reputation. He was someone who would piss liberals off. He was someone who would be funny to watch. His presidency would be a joke, he would make a farce of the office, and some people voted for him for that reason. Again, I obviously don’t think that Jon Stewart was the sole creator of Trump’s reputation. But I don’t think you can say he’s totally blameless, either.
