What happened here?

Take a look at this video clip that I obtained via Rob Beschizza. It is supposedly from a live broadcast. The blonde woman on the left of the screen seems to mysteriously disappear before one’s eyes.

Where did she go? One possibility is that the original live video was later doctored which in these days of CGI technology cannot be ruled out. But why bother to do that? Otherwise, the only rational explanation that I can think of is that she happened to move out of the frame behind the woman with the cart in just such a way that she seemed to disappear, a remarkable case of fortuitous timing.

The other possibilities are that she was abducted by aliens or that she was raptured, except that in the latter case her clothes would have fallen in a heap on the floor where she had stood.

Holographic projection. The technology has improved since the time R2D2 projected Princess Leia.

In the earlier frames it looks like she’s wearing a gold dress that appears to be a jacket and jeans, but once the other woman passes her, you can see clearly that it’s a blue dress with cloaking technology.

But seriously, because we’re watching the upper part of her body it looks very mysterious, but if you watch her legs instead she doesn’t seem to disappear quite so suddenly (at least that works for me).

The “disappearing” woman moves to her right (our left) at exactly the right speed to stay occluded from our view by the woman in the foreground. I can see a gap in the benches through which she would have passed.

I don’t think there was room for her to move out of frame while remaining entirely behind the other woman in front. There is furniture/structure behind her.

If you look at the “disappearing” woman’s feet, you can see a bit of reflection and a flash of her foot as she walks after she “disappears” behind the other woman. If there was no editing, then she probably just managed to keep pace and stay hidden from the camera.

As Friendly mentions, there is a gap in the structure, but she has to move toward the camera to reach it. This happens to be the same direction the masking woman is moving.

chigau @4: Never mind the gorilla, the elephant, or the sunburned herring. The dog didn’t bark!

I don’t think the woman in the background walked away. Towards the end you can see her boots through the gap between the legs of the woman with the cart; she doesn’t seem to be moving.

@4.chigau (違う) : “And how many of you even noticed the gorilla?”

Okay, ya got me there. I had to go back and check!

    Very odd clip and puzzling.

    Cheers!

There was a gorilla?? I guess I was too distracted by the people bouncing basketballs.

The reason it doesn’t look like she could have just walked out of the shot hidden behind the other woman is that she would have to have done it on purpose to pull it off. And it turns out that’s exactly what she did:

Link goes to an article in Danish about what happened (because the clip is from a Danish channel). The short version is that the woman works for Danish TV2 herself as a handball commentator, and suddenly realized that she was cluttering up the background of someone else’s interview. She then tried to get out of shot as discreetly as possible, and succeeded beyond the call of duty, so to speak.

Observe the video screens to behind the talker’s head and to the right of the frame. Clearly there is a missing bit of video timed just as the speaker, and the woman pushing the cart, pauses. It wouldn’t have to be very long for the woman to disappear. A second or three would be sufficient.

There is no ‘missing footage’, she just walked out left of frame coincidentally behind the woman with the cart.

I think the gorilla comment is a reference to this Richard Wiseman video:

Crap. I just had to peek, didn’t I? Don’t try to rescue me, I’m done for already. Save yourselves!
