Looks like Sri Lanka picked a bad day to play sports …

The same day that Sri Lanka received a thumping at the hands of South Africa in the World Cup cricket tournament, they also suffered a shock defeat to Bhutan in a qualifying game for the 2018 football World Cup. Bhutan is ranked as the worst of 209 teams in FIFA and needless to say they are thrilled at winning the two games 1-0 and 2-1.

While Sri Lanka is by no means a soccer power, they were highly favored to win these games and may have suffered from over-confidence.

But congratulations to Bhutan. It is always nice when a rank underdog pulls off an upset.

I heard about this on NPR last night. I know nothing about the various rivalries and histories involved, but I do love a good underdog story. Go Bhutan!

The genocide of Tamils at the end of the civil war has an effect of who I will cheer for.
I do not cheer for North Korea (do they even have a team, or did Kim Jong-Il have them shot?). I do not cheer for China. And I definitely did not not cheer for Sri Lanka.
