Politician claims UK storms caused by same-sex marriage

It looks like the UK has its own share of nutty politicians who seem to think that their god is like one of these deranged people who go around randomly killing innocent people and causing havoc out of a sense of grievance.

A UK Independence party (Ukip) councillor has claimed that Britain’s recent storms and floods are “divine retribution for the government’s decision to legalise gay marriage.

David Silvester, who defected from the Tories in protest at David Cameron’s support for same-sex unions, claimed he had warned the prime minister that the legislation would result in “disasters”.

In a letter to the Henley Standard he wrote: “The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel (and in naked breach of a coronation oath) will be beset by natural disasters such as storms, disease, pestilence and war.”

Blaming the prime minister for the bad weather, he added: “It is his fault that large swaths of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods.

“He has arrogantly acted against the Gospel that once made Britain ‘great’ and the lesson surely to be learned is that no man or men, however powerful, can mess with Almighty God with impunity and get away with it for everything a nation does is weighed on the scaled of divine approval or disapproval.”

What is interesting about these religious nuts is that they don’t even know their own Bible. Silvester doesn’t know that the ‘Gospels’ he venerates are just the first four books of the New Testament and those say absolutely nothing about homosexuality. To find the condemnations of homosexuality he seeks, one has to look in the Old Testament or the letters supposedly written by Paul and others.

Of course the difference between the UK and USA is:
“Mr Silvester has been suspended from UKIP following his comments.” (from the BBC)
Of course the UKIP are quite a bit to the left of the GOP…

I like the @UkipWeather twitter account (sample tweet: “High winds at a garden centre in Kent after 2 men were spotted heading towards the plants without stopping to look at the ride-on lawnmowers”), but for anyone familiar with the Radio 4 Shipping Forecast, this parody can’t be beaten.

Silvester doesn’t refer to “the Gospels”, but to “the Gospel”. Paul refers to his own teachings as “the gospel” throughout his letters. For example Galatians 1:11-12

But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Although only four books in the New Testament are actually titled The Gospel According to X, that’s just a naming convention for originally untitled works. ‘Gospel’ simply means ‘Good News (about Jesus)’. It’s not inaccurate for a Christian to refer to the entire New Testament as “the Gospel”.

So to paraphrase: “My god is a petty, bitter, homicidal, dried up old fart!”

Wait… I’m confused. I think he meant that as a selling point. He did, didn’t he?

Deities like this, even if they were real, would be the enemy. The only reasonable compromise would be to bide our time until we could remove the threat, which would also entail removing the church that dealt with it. Can’t leave support structures intact. That’d be like sending the master off on vacation and leaving the slaves stuck in a pen. And slavery on a societal scale sounds somewhat close to what that sick little fantasy is all about.
