Talk on “Challenges of Peacemaking in Israel-Palestine”

The organization Cleveland Peace Action is sponsoring the above talk by Dr. Jeff Halper who will speak on “Challenges of Peacemaking in Israel-Palestine” on Wednesday, October 30th, 6:45 p.m. at Bertram Woods Library, Shaker Blvd. at Warrensville Center Rd.

The program is free and open to the public.

I heard Halper talk some years ago at my university and it was good to hear a first-hand account of what is going on with Israel’s steady annexation of Palestinian lands.

Dr. Jeff Halper is the Director of ICAHD, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. He was born in 1946 in Minnesota and moved to Israel in 1973. The Quakers/American Friends nominated him for the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE.

HALPER was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for ICAHD’s work “to liberate both the Palestinian and the Israeli people from the yoke of structural violence” and “build equality between their people by recognizing their common humanity.”

He has been a staunch advocate for justice and civil rights for all Israelis and Palestinians. He spent ten years as a community worker in Jerusalem aiding low-income Mizrahi* families. He co-founded ICAHD in 1997 to resist Israel’s strategy of house demolitions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. (*Mizrahi Jews are Arabic-speaking and came to Israel from Arab countries)

He is the author of three books including: An Israeli in Palestine and
Obstacles to Peace…reframing of the Palestinian – Israeli Conflict.’

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, an American organization, does good work helping rid the world of curable diseases.

The United States murders innocent people indiscriminately.

The United States provides foreign aid to citizens under the rule of oppressive regimes.

The United States funds Somali warlords to kill people and destabilize the country.

    @colnago80:

As Trucreep points out, most people understand that being against the policies of a country’s government is not equivalent to being against that country or its citizens. In your eyes, is there anything an Israeli administration could do that would be immoral, or is even suggesting that possibility an attack on the nation and its people?

  3. colnago80 says

In your eyes, is there anything an Israeli administration could do that would be immoral

Yes, it would be immoral, IMHO, to carry out an Eichmann solution for the Palestinian problem.

    Citation needed.

    Here’s something else.

This is how Israel contributes to positively to the the world. The only things the Muslimes contribute is disease, filth, squalor, and murder.

Incidentally, for those who claim that it’s the Government of Israel that’s holding up a peace agreement with the Palestinians, here’s the latgest demand from the latter. They have been making this demand for 65 years and no Israeli Government is going to accept it. A perfect example of Einstein’s aphorism that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

And using the phrase “the palestinian problem” makes you seem completely rational and not at all in the same phase-space as Eichmann.

Eight prior comments in all, and five of them by slc. And he claims not to be rabidly pro-Israel.

Any mention of the word, and he craws out from under his rock.

Actually, muslims are a big funder in Green, post-petroleum technology and in water desalinization efforts. I mean, the Saudis, IRan and all don’t exactly match CHina, but they’re still big proponents.

But you know, that never stops racists.

I’m quite sure Mr Straw knows whereof he speaks. This is a typical example of someone telling it as she/he sees it being labelled “antisemitic”.

quoting Einat Wilf from your link:

“Throughout the debate I reiterated that the origin of the conflict was the Arab and Palestinian unwillingness to accept the Jewish people’s legitimate right to a state of their own, and that as long as that willingness is absent there will be no true solution.”

Er no -- the origin of the conflict is that the UN at the instigation of the USA and UK gave the land the palestinians were living on for centuries, and which they rightly considered their home, to other people whose claim was ridiculous and should never have been entertained for a second. It seems the palestinians have never accepted this theft as a done deal and still want their land back. Quelle surprise! So I guess, as this speaker points out, “there will be no true solution”.

Certainly there will be no solution if no-one is able to even discuss what the problems are because speech is always trumped by the label of anti-semitism.

Counting -- five, four, three, two…….

  10. colnago80 says

Er no – the origin of the conflict is that the UN at the instigation of the USA and UK gave the land the palestinians were living on for centuries,

A perfect example of the big lie. Goebbels would be proud of you. The fact is that most of the Palestinians living in what is now Israel are descended from Arabs who immigrated there during the latter half of the 19th century, drawn by the competition between the newly united German Empire and Great Britain. Mark Twain, who visited there in the late 1860s noted that the area appeared almost depopulated, and that Jerusalem appeared to have fewer inhabitants then his native Hannibal, MO.

However, even if your argument had some validity, which it doesn’t, then it could be used to claim that all the nations of the Western Hemisphere are also illegitimate because they are the result of European settlers displacing the native population.

It should also be noted that almost half the current population of Israel consists of the descendents of Jews who were ousted from the Arab world after 1948. But, of course, to the Sailors of the world, they don’t count.

  11. colnago80 says

Then it would also be reasonable for Native Americans to demand that New York City be returned to the descendants of the original native population.

  12. colnago80 says

I consider that a compliment coming from the blog’s resident antisemitic Hitlerite gangster.

  13. colnago80 says

Are you trying to say that there is no Palestinian problem? Clearly the problem of Palestinians living in refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan is a problem that will have to be solved. However, the proposed resettlement of them in Israel is a non-starter and ain’t going to happen.

  14. colnago80 says

I suggest that you read the article before demonstrating your total ignorance of the subject area.

Just in time for Halloween, the discredited, disgraced Joan Peters thesis is back from the dead!

There was a reason why Mark Twain was a novelist and not a demographer, and why travelogues are generally not considered ironclad demographic evidence by intelligent people. The British and Ottoman surveys of historic Palestine paint a very different picture.

  16. colnago80 says

And just in time for Halloween, the discredited idea that the Ottoman survey of Palestine discredited Mark Twain’s observations neglects to mention that most of the people counted were Bedouins, who were not permanent residents but were nomads who traveled over much of the Middle East and Northern Africa and had done so for centuries. Nice try but no cigar.

Dirty Wars by Jeremy Scahill :]

Look, I get you are pro-Israel, and have a hatred for Muslims (or Muslimes as you say, which, just in my opinion, is as tacky and lame as saying something like OBummer :P), but I do not accept that they contribute nothing but disease, filth, squalor, and murder. They have given us beautiful works of art, beautiful poetry (although I’m not really one to judge that sort of thing -- not much of a writer), and rich culture. It’s easy to hate and hate the more you reduce a group’s humanity, but it’s not the right thing to do.

  18. colnago80 says

Unfortunately, much of those contributions came before the radical Islamists hijacked the religion and sent most of the Muslim World into the dark ages. In fact, a thousand years ago, Baghdad was the center of scientific exploration in the world while Europe slept through the Dark Ages. That is until Al-Ghazali put the kibosh on it. The cretins in the Christian dominionist movement in the US and their Haradi counterparts in Israel can only dream of having the influence of Al-Ghazali.

..a first-hand account of what is going on with Israel’s steady annexation of Palestinian lands.

Israel gave the Sinai Peninsula which it captured during a war of survivval against Arab aggression at high cost in Israeli sweat, blood and tears back to Egypt in the 1970’s.

Israel gave back much of Judea and Samaria (the so-called West Bank) also captured during that fight for its existence and its civilians lives to Yasser Arafat’s PLO in the 1990’s before Arafat went back on his word, imported weapons from Iran and started yet another war which, as is traditional, ended very badly for his side.

Israel gave back all of Gaza to Hamas, hoping for peace. They got in return indiscriminate rocket-fire at innocent Jewish civilians from the newly returned territory as a sign of the Palestinians “gratitude.”

Israel offered the Palestinians about 95% of what they wanted back when Clinton was president and Arafat still dictator over his people. Arafat turned thatdela down following another core part of the Palestinian cultural idea -- the part where they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportnity for peace.

Israel surrenders land for peace makes peace offers all the time just needing a partner for peace and has shown a willingness to compromise from the very start whereas the Arab side always rejects these generous peace offers, constantly starts wars it can’t win and has to emotionally blackmail the world into stopping and refuses to even speak the name ‘Israel’ or recognise their right to exist in many quarters.

Y’know these historical facts kinda tell us that Israel ain’t the side to be scapegoating and blaming here in any reasonable reading of reality. Oh & also that the assertions of Israeli annexation are utterly false, ridiculous and even outright offensive.

The only thing I’m aware of that Israel has completely annexed and isn’t willing to bargain on is keeping Jerusalem united as Israel’s capital and given that;’s the most Holy city in Judaism that’s fair enough. (Yerushaláyim is only a distant third holiest a very long way behind Mecca to the Arabs. Mohammad’s claim to Jerusalem? Tell ‘im ‘e’s dreamin’!)

    @colnago80 : “Muslimes “

I hope that was a typo because, much as I agree with you a lot of the time, no that’s not cool.

I think that Islam is a truly appalling and dangerous religious ideology that brainwashes, limits and harms its followers.

But Muslims -- the people -- are individuals, all human beings like us and a lot of them ignore the worst parts of their religion and thus lead reasonable lives ans good people despite their beliefs.

Attacking Islam is much needed here, it gets a strangely soft ride from the humanists atheists on FTB given it super-sizes all that is worst in fundamentalism and religious extremism. Attacking individual nasty and Islamofascist nations, dictators and terrorists is more than amply justified.

But, making a sweeping generalisation and just abusing every Muslim on the globe ignoring the reality that most of them just want to get on and live their lives in peace -- despite the exhortations of their Death Cult and hate speech Holy Book -- that’s not cool or fair and is counter-productive so please don’t do that.

Obvious solution -- one that should have happened many decades ago but the Arab nations refused to do it for their own political ends -- the Palestinian refugees most of whoem were born elsewhere (heck, even Arafat was born in Cairo) are given citizenship in the current countries of residence and adopt those nationalities.

  25. StevoR : Free West Papua, free Tibet, let the Chagossians return! says

I’d also suggest a reasonable compromise to end terrorism problems in Gaza, Judea and Samaria is for compulsory deportation of any Gazans or Palestinians residents involved in terrorism including its promotion and advocacy to an Arab nation of their choice and a permanent ban on their re-entry to Israel.

Arabs unwilling to live peacefully under Israeli governance should also be encouraged perhaps even financially rewarded for departing the Jewish nation permanently. Win-win peaceful scenario.
