America’s new BFF

Recall that it was a mere ten years ago, when the French declined to sign on the Iraq invasion in 2003, that they were derisively referred to as ‘cheese eating surrender monkeys’ and some members of Congress, in an example of incredible childishness, renamed the French fries in the Congressional cafeteria as ‘Freedom fries’. At that time, England was America’s best friend.

That was then, this is now. Pack your bags and move out England, because America has a new sweetheart. In the wake of the UK parliament’s vote to not take part in an attack on Syria, France has now become the US’s darling, with John Kerry praising them as “America’s oldest ally”.

Ah, how fickle is the love between nations!

Now that this time the French government is gung-ho to join the US in attacking Syria but the British have declined, does that mean that English muffins will be renamed ‘Freedom muffins’?

As an Englishman by birth, I resent the omission of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. What is the Union for if not to share the blame?

Is this about the US, the UK and France? Or is it about Bush, Blair and Chirac vs. Obama, Cameron and Hollande?

the French […] were derisively referred to as ‘cheese eating surrender monkeys’ and some members of Congress,

Don’t forget Rumsfeld calling the French, “old Europe”.

Does that make the UK “not-so-merrye Olde Englande”?

in an example of incredible childishness, renamed the French fries in the Congressional cafeteria as ‘Freedom fries’.

What would you expect from people who didn’t know that “French” referred to the cutting of the potatoes? Especially those using thinly sliced excuses for starting an illegal war.

A big part of the US’s disdain for France in 2003 was the fact that Saddam Hussein had oil drilling deals with the French and Russia, but not the US. The US and UK tore up those contracts after invading.
