Stephanie Banister, a parliamentary candidate in next month’s Australian federal elections from the right wing nationalist One Nation party, is being described as their Sarah Palin. And it is not a compliment as this clip from a news report indicates. She thinks that Islam is a country and uses the Arabic word ‘haram’ (which roughly translates as sinful or forbidden or disapproved by god) as a umbrella term to cover anything Islamic.
What I liked was that the news clip followed up each of her false utterances with an immediate correction. Our news programs should do that too. It might make politicians more careful about what they say.
Although her views are atrocious, she does not seem to have the hard, cynical edge of Palin. She strikes me as having more the kind of goofy ignorance of Christine “I am not a witch” O’Donnell.

I did love the reporter’s emphasis on “unique views”, and her line-by-line fisking was worthy of a top blogger. Well done that lady!

Even “far left” NPR generally lets its interviewees go unchallenged, or challenged only in the mildest way. Our media are so far from questioning the implications of political opinions that I have no hope of seeing it. But incorrect “facts” should at least be pointed out as such. Maybe if Bill Moyers took over CNN…but no, that won’t happen.
Palin, Bachmann, O’Donnell, now Banister -- all unwitting dupes of the International Blonde Conspiracy’s insidious subversion of respect for brunettes!
